1.9 TDI OIL

Post by MSD »

Hi everyone,

Ive read on the forum that the oil spec must meet 505.01 specifications and must be synthetic. The engine is the 74kw ATD motor and this is the first service that needs to be done since i got the car.150 000 km on the clock.

Can i use or
Shell Helix Ultra 5w-30 or
Shell helix Ultra 5w-40 or
Shell helix HX7 5w-30 or
Shell helix HX7 5w-40?

Any idea on how much the cam belt service should cost? and is it necessary to replace the brake fluid?

Check the bottle. If it says 505.01 approved then you can use it. If it doesn't, you can't.

When I took my Golf 1.9 TDI to VW earlier this month for an oil change they used Fuchs Titan? - however not sure of it's availablity or how it compares to Shell, Motul etc.

Why not HX7? It is VW 502.00/505.01 approved but only the 5W-30, the 5W-40 is VW 502 00/505 00 approved.

it has to be HX7 AV if i'm not mistaken, but LiquiMoly 4100 is best.
Cambelt with waterpump and coolant should be R2500 - R3000 these days.
It is an ingenius solution to a problem that should have never existed in the 1st place...

Read the bottle and see what the manual says. Only ultra or hx7 AV has the correct spec. Ultra is actual synth so I Prefer that.
So although I can't fault liqui moly - my touareg takes 13L of this stuff every 10000 km so that means around R2200 for oil per change.
The shell that works just perfectly fine costs me under R1200 for the same oil change. So for me it just ain't worth it.

HX7 is semi-synthetic (half mineral) - for thus reason I would agree with panic for the application.

I recently moved from Ultra to HX8 and found that I no longer have a oil consumption between my 10000km oil changes and it's cheaper so it works for me however Ultra still remains the more superior oil between the two.

ICE King, interesting that you should mention oil consumption between changes. My TDI (VE-110) was always serviced by the previous owner's workshop with VW oil (not sure which one or where VW source their oils), and according to him, never required a top-up between intervals. I put in Shell Ultra 5W40 15000 km ago, and now that the next change is due, it's used more than a litre. I'm not too fazed about it, but I wonder whether there are more volatiles in the Ultra than in other oils.

Vw ises castrol. Ultra has a much more aggressive detergent package so t is eating away at some stuff thatbhas built up.. The oil consumption will stabilize again. Just keep using it.

Why do you recommend an oil that doesn't have a single VW rating for use in an engine that requires a very specific VW rating?

Apologies, forgot the question mark. Does diesel need specific 505.01 oil?

My car is running two years on this no issues.. A friend still running it in his YZ450 60th edition. The viscosity is better in my opinion for JHB heat conditions.

A PD TDi engine is a diesel but it is certainly no truck engine like most of the Rimula specifications cater for. VW PD TDi engines require VW 505, 505.01 or 507 specification oil which Rimula does not comply with.

This makes sense, and I do hope you're right about the consumption stabilising in due course.

Re: 1.9 TDI OIL

Post by panic-mechanic »

VW Pumpe Duse (PD) engines compresses the diesel injector pump with the cam to around 1600 to 2000 bar. It creates massive shear force between the cam and the injector. There was VERY VERY specific shear properties that an oil has to comply to to be suitable for use in that engine otherwise it will eat the cam like a three year old on a lollipop. That spec is 505.01 or 507 if it has PD and a DPF.
So before flying off and telling us that 12 second petrol engined golfs is ok with it and bikes and truck engines thus by that conclusion it must be ok -
perhaps do some research as to what engine you are actually giving advise for. If somebody think it is a good idea and follow your bad advise there is no recourse for them but it will cost them thousands and thousands to repair.

So i replaced the water pump, cambelt kit, oil level sensor under the sump, oil with shell helix ultra 5w-40, air filter, oil filter and diesel filter. Total R5 000.00 for everything including installation.

The motor does sound lightly louder which im hoping is not a major issue.

When I started reading up on VW TDI oil specifications, I found this page; towards the end, it contains a flowchart that I found helpful.
https://www.oilspecifications.org/artic ... lained.php

My TDI is an old VE-type, so it has a classic "low-shear" 8V valvetrain, which is why I'm using Shell Ultra 5W40 (specced for 505.00 but not 505.01). If I were driving a PD, I would be looking for a 505.01 spec oil. Interestingly, Helix 7 Professional "AV", even though it is only "synthetic technology", not fully synthetic, satisfies 505.01. It must be the specific additive package. I wonder whether panic-mechanic will chime in when he gets back...
