2010 VW Polo 1.6TDI loosing / using cooling fluid

Post by malphil »

Hi all

As stated above, It started happening after Dec vacation, car was left at home for 3 weeks, and upon return i started to drive with it to work and back, and about the 3rd morning when I started the car the warning light came up for overheating / low on cooling liquid, the bottle was just below the "min" mark and just topped it up to "Maks" mark, I have refilled it about 4 times now, dont see anything leaking anyware, there was a wet spot on the ground at work if the car is parked on an decline towards the left, but nothing if the car is parked at home where the garage is level?

What can it be?

- waterpump failure ?
- Gasket?
- Intercooler leaking (bottom pipe looks like there is something leaking but not sure)
- EGR Cooler?

Is there water coming out the exhaust?

My Previous Polo 1.6 TDI started leaking from the EGR cooler and was coming out the exhuast while the vehicle was running... VW had to sort it out for me as my car was under warranty at the time.

In this instance with what you describe the issue to be- most common issue on these 1.6 TDI's are the water pumps.

Your water pump could be leaking internally. Other issue could be that the bearing in the waterpump is on its way out and will therefore push water out a overflow hole.

Been through the issue just last week or so and had to change the waterpump as well as the cambelt (because it just makes sense to do it while you there). All is well now and the car feels just like the day I chipped it
