1.6 TDI (CAY) DSG7

Post by 8VALVE-zn »

Hi Guys,

As of late I've been experiencing a very very strange problem with my 2011 Jetta 5 1.6 TDI DSG.

I would be driving ever so normal, both engine and box sounding and feeling very good with no issues apparent at all. All of a sudden the engine cuts out completely (completely dead), the car is still in drive (D) and just free wheels when this happens.

So I pull over to the side of the road- Open up the engine cover and know jack shiiiitttt about whats happening under there- Tried cranking and the car just wont take start. The investigation starts and I notice a thingy that looks like a "plug lead" with wiring connected to it running from the fuel rail that plugs into an electrical point on the head (there are four of them that connect to the head). I play around with the first "plug lead" looking thingy and there we go the car cranks a bit more positive towards a start but only goes up to 500rpm and fails to take start. A friend walking by stopped to help. I asked for him to hold that particular part into place nice and solid, tried cranking and still no start. Tried the same a minute later and bang started and drove to work one shot!

There were no warning lights that came up, all that happened was a blinking "D" on the dash when the car cutout. Now I have had serious DSG problems before and know the signs of a bad DQ200- this is not at all the same problem.

Firstly can I have some help knowing what the "thingy" is? I know nothing about TDI, and I have to say I was very lucky to even get the car to start. Also, any other things that will be worth a check?

As always, thanks in advance!

The 1.6 TDI have had more injector failures than the legend 1.9TDi, so in all likelihood it could be the case.

Panic I will WhatsApp those pics to you.

Uhm all 4 injectors won't fail at the same time and then decide to work again. So either a pickup or a wiring issue more likely..
Of course vagcom scan might help as it could have stored a fault.

Panic, the car went in for its 145,000km service so a scan was in order.

The results from the scan picked up error of low fuel pressure. Does the 1.6TDI have an injector pump? Possible things to check up on?

Just to note, the car battled to start once the service was done.

yes it has an injector pump. Two as a matter of fact. One in the tank and one driven by the engine.

Update: Recently got a stage 1 file done by CPI (amazing service) - basically the egr has been disabled and the dpf delete is done (physically removed as well) ...I should have done this 2 years ago but really glad I took the plung and did it, the car feels way more responsive and is slightly lighter on diesel...recently came up to JHB, and used just under half a tank to cover the 600km journey
