Water Leak driving me insane

Post by DieselBoy »

Howizit dubbers

So i have this weird issue, my car is Polo PD130 is leaking water. The annoying part is that there is no visible leaks so what I've noticed is that when driving the car does not overheat or the heat gauge does not go past the 90 degree mark.
Once the water light comes on and i stop, there is a lot of pressure when opening the water bottle and small amounts of water drips from the overflow.
Has anyone experienced this issue before? Do i need to bleed the water system again maybe?

I have replaced both bottle and cap already

Check for leaks with a black light, it will show residue of evaporated water. I'd also get car up to temp, park while engine running and check for leaks. Assuming it is not a blown head gasket or similar.

Uhm you should not ever open the system to add water when it is hot. You are partly perpetuating the situation by doing that.
Only add water when it has cooled down enought not to have pressure.

Is your fan kicking on? I had the same problem on my velo, changed the water bottle cap as well but it still continued.
Changed the fan switch on the radiator and all is good.

Pressure in the system is normal when it's hot, this issue has been discussed millions of times over the years and require an extra 5-10 mins of digging to uncover all of the suggestions given previously, being:

- Leaking from the water pump
- Leaking from the radiator
- Leaking from the coolant flange on the right of the head
- Leaking from the couplings onto the heat exchanger under the oil filter housing
- Leaking from the coolant pipe couplings
- Leaking from the interface between the pipes and the front of the block behind the waterpump
- Leaking from the thermostat housing
- Blown head gasket, resulting in coolant being burnt and not leaking
- Blown head gasket, resulting in coolant leaking outside of the motor (not common)
- Coolant bottle cap not sealing resulting in coolant boiling off slowly while driving
- Cracked block
- Cracked head
- Leaking from a welsh(freeze) plug that has rusted.

A leak from the fan switch is also diificult to find .. found 2 cars with this issue, very hard to notice.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on :driving:

Howzit gents

Thanks for all the input, so it appears to be the cap not sealing onto the bottle resulting it to boiling over slowly. I will replace both today.
