2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
Hi guys. Car cuts out while driving. Seems like everytime I ride over 140km/h it does that. Electronically everything is fine. Just the diesel isn't going into the engine. Pulled out the relay 109, popped the cover, no visible wear. Pulled the fuel sending unit from the tank, cleaned it with high pressure air, guage is going haywire on the cluster. Car cranks but doesn't start. Hoping it's not that ECU. However, the car did drive perfectly, even better after the system was bled through thoroughly. Started and everything, drove for a day, then cut out again. Diagnostic isn't picking up anything. Tried to crank from a bottle diesel with both delivery and return tubes submerged. As I swing the ignition, the pump sucks up midway then waits. Could it be the sending unit that is faulty? I really don't want to get rid of this car. Power on demand, strong and economical, but not with parts. Parts are killing me. Dmf clutch replacement @R11500 vw tavcor. R6230@ Goldwagen. R5000 (incl shipping) eBay. Then there's labour costs

get the pump tested at a diesel specialist (bosch repair centre). sounds like it is not pumping

Re: 2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
Could be a blocked fuel pick-up in the tank.

If you read his post you will see he tried a bottle in the front so blocked fuel hose is out.

Not sure if these injector pumps have this, but its common on the older pumps mainly on isuzu bakkies and trucks, theres like a solenoid switch on the injector pump, should be a single wire.
It controls fuel supply. If u have no power at that wire when cranking, there will be no fuel being pumped.
Maybe do some reading on your specific pump regarding that and follow up with some tests.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on

Re: 2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
No it was a fully ecu controlled pump. Not a simple switch. The amount of fuel injected is controlled by the ecu.
So baically there are mainly 3 reasons these pumps stop working
The seals leak and it gets air in.
The shaft that drives the pump internally snaps
The control unit on the pump fails.
All these are very easily tested by professional shops that has the tools for it.
The middle one you can test by undoing the bolt that goes right in the centre of the pump between the outlet pipes. Then take a drill bit that will fit in there and turn the enfine by hand. While you keep pressure on the bit it should go in and out as you rotate the motor. If no in/out movement then the shaft is broken.

Two weeks later, after buying a new crank sensor, still no start. Mechanic says something about a cut off valve not opening. Guess the crank sensor needs to be returned then. New pump perhaps?

As Ashveer said yes. Solenoid switch. Get your mechanic to test that.Clev wrote:Two weeks later, after buying a new crank sensor, still no start. Mechanic says something about a cut off valve not opening. Guess the crank sensor needs to be returned then. New pump perhaps?

He says it doesn't open. Do I replace the whole pump or just that switch?

Did he took it out and tested it ? If so then yes only replace that solenoid valve. Hope you come right.

Re: 2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
Hi yall. Having the same problem I think after buying new engine. Had an overfill with oil. Drove at a high speed, engine died/ cut out with lots of black greyish smoke. Started up again after engine cooled down. Engine was very noisy. Glow plug light was flashing. No check engine light. Replaced glow plugs and car was over fuelling. Did pump timing, consumption better but engine shudders with each start up with white smoke. Cant distinguish between diesel smoke or oil smoke. Changed air filter as well. Checked the diesel filter. Clear. The smoke and engine shudder is rife in the morning startup with heavy white smoke. It disappears when car reaches normal operating temperature along with engine shudder. Idles normal at 800rpm but when using gears 1,2,3 theres a flapping noise coming from the injection pump side. When it idles, theres a noticeable ticking sound like tappets. The smoke, engine shudder and flapping noise from the pump bothers me. I was told to set the injection quantity using vcds together with doing the pump timing. Will it solve problem of the loudness of the engine?

Re: 2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
I was having the same problem with my 2001 Jetta TDI. What I found was you need to set the dynamic timing (pump timing) using the VCDS, maybe your car is over advanced on the pump timing. I just set mine and it sounds good now

Re: 2001 Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF start problem
So many things.
No rpm being read. Thatbcan be sensor or somebodY forgot to put the crank sender wheel back on.
The timing lift sensor is dead or not plugged in on injector 3
The timing is completely out
The pump shaft was broken
There is no power on the ecu so it does not open the pump
System is not bled.
There might be many more.
Start by scanning thensystem with vcds, then go to reading blocks and see if you get rom during cranking.
