Shutter

Post by GremlinCCS »

Got annoying shutters the last while.

Shutter 1. Only on steering wheel and only when accelerating. Could this be ball joints? Teirod ends?

Shutter 2. This mostly only happens on the highway. Driving in six, rpms under 2k and trying to accelerate. The whole car starts to shake terribly. Happens from third to six only when revs are below 2k.
What can be the culprits here? Clutch, pressure plate?

Driver problem. why on earth expect the thing to accelerate under 2000 rpm in sixth?
There are literally thousands of articles on the net explaining why lugging is bad for the engine and gearbox. Specially inline 4 worse on diesel and even worse on turbo diesel.
Google search lugging your turbo diesel

It happens in accident. Just cruising behind other ppl and then speed up when they out of the way. But slowly just from 100 up to 120. Only realize it's low rpm after the shutter. It just cruise so nice....

Normally put in six and forget about it.

I realize that's not recommended and trying to avoid as much as possible but it happens. I just know it never did that but does now.

Check engine mounts. Check harmonic balancer. Can even be tha start of a oil pump failure as on those engines the balancer shaft thing is in the pump similar to golf5. But it is a bad idea to let them lug.

It's a modded Caddy Life. Upgraded to a 2l TDI Audi A4 BKD motor and gearbox.

Engine mounts replaced with the motor so almost new but could be a bad mounting. Will check.
Harmonic balancer? This the one on the oil pump?
I don't have the balancer oil pump in the motor. Only a small rotary pump on a chain.

Harmonic balancer is the main crank pulley. It has a rubber mounted outer section. It's called a harmonic balancer.
But it could be your injector issues causing it. Sort that out first.

Wouldnt a damaged/cracked/broken rubber harmonic balancer give of a knocking sound?

Did a few of those on the bmw diesels..

Depends on how it fails. I have seen some just turn on the rubber and this basically stop working or causing vibration rather than stopping it.
Don't ever believe there is only a single way for something to fail on cars and between different makes. That is the day younwill see something new go wrong in a different way.

Thanx for the education... Can't think I even noticed the rubber when putting in the engine.

Well I'm off to nelspruit for a week for work, will strip out the injectors as soon as I get back. Till then she's save in the garage....

Might get n second motor instead of doing the injectors. Found a motor with new sensors, reconned injectors, new tandem pump and new turbo for a couple of bucks more than it would cost to do the injectors. They have some electronic issues and said if a new ECU don't sort their problems I can get the motor.
Hoping they win as they are in the same boat as me. Installed BKD in a caddy.
But also hope they don't win as it would be good for me...

Hard to be in two minds.

Just a quick update, the shutter disappeared with the reconned injectors...
All smooth now again.
