Polo 1.6 TDI 2010 CAY misbehaving during warm-up

Hi Guys

This is my first post on this forum. My 2010 TDI has a problem during it's warm-up cycle. The car has 122 000kms on it. After driving 1km, the car goes into a weird mode. It happens for 3-4 days in a row, then stops for a few days.

Symptoms:
  • No warning lights
  • Loss of power
  • White smoke
  • Rough shaky idle with a diesel knock sound under acceleration
  • Turbo lag when pulling off, at 2000 rpm it comes through strong
  • When returning to idle, the revs drop sharply to 75% idle, then immediately kicks up to 1100rpm (briefly visible in video if you look quick)
I've taken the car to 3 VW dealerships who couldn't help me because no fault codes are recorded and the car is not under warranty. It's a bit frustrating. I very much would like my car to be normal again. When the car has warmed up, everything is fine again. Only problem is, these cars take a while to warm up (~15 km before issue clears). It can get quite bad in stop and go traffic with the shaking and smoking.

I've been advised to sell the car, but I'm determined to fix the issue. The car is great and I can't just make this someone else's problem. Doesn't feel right.

Start by changing the water temp sender.

hey.

my 2009 tdi had similar symptoms..

what sorted it for me was driving once a week for about 4-5mins between 3000 and 4000 rpm without dropping below 3000rpm.

cleans out DPF.
