What is the maximum boost a stock turbo can handle?

Post by DieselBoy »

Hey dudes and dudettes

I just overhauled my head(PD130) I was advised to recon the turbo but now I'm thinking of adding a lil more power. I was wondering if I should recon the turbo and get the boost adjusted slightly higher or getting a bigger turbo. But I'm not sure which turbo to go for, which is more reliable. I do not want to fly but just a bit more power would be a "nice to have"
Any advised would be greatly appreciated

PS" My minister of finance is did not approve the budget so I'm running on limited funds" :(

Lekker spooling but also nice bump in power would be a GTB1756vk if you an find one. otherwise go big one time and get gt or gtb2260vk.

stock turbos can take 1.6bar boost max reliably. more can be done but it will not last.

Shot Stig
It wouldn't make sense repairing a turbo every odd month or so, with a gtb2260vk what, what would need to be replaced?
Like i said I'm just looking to gets that lil extra kick and would Garret be the best buy?

I remember that my old 9n Polo Sportline ran around at around 1.9 bar on the standard VNT1749Va but I drove her with a lot of mechanical sympathy.

I'll see if I can find my old logs but I never went in to limp mode.

That's way high...stock is around 1.4 and your map was relatively conservative was it not. My Mapped Cupra TDI ran 1.7

Have a look here where we discussed different PD TDi boost levels back in 2009...

You should understand that the turbo itself does not determine the actual boost level. The management system using an n75 valve ups it from above the wastegate pressure which is set lowish at like 0.3 bar. So the map built into the management system determines the actual boost. Whether the turbo can physically deliver and how it delivers it is a different story.

Thanks Panic
So meaning that should i want the turbo start kicking from about 1500rpm, this needs to be adjusted/set on my ecu or am I wrong?
I'm not about to do that but i just wanna be sure that i understand this whole setup correctly and would it be wise to get the 2.0 tdi turbo fitted?

Sigh. There are many things that influence where a turbo starts making positive boost but size is the main criteria very generally speaking. So if you fit a bigger turbo it will generally pass that threshold later but be able to sustain higher boost higher up in the rev range. You cannot make a bigger turbo spool earlier by asking for more boost lower down, it has to pass the physical point of being able to produce boost before you can control how much it will produce.

Thanks for the reply
Very insightful, i just don't want be robbed by the guys that uses turbo jargon to confuse me and try and get me to buy a charger that i don't really need.
So i think I'll go for the turbo i was offered initially.
Sorry for my inexperienced questions but this is out of my scope

Make sure it will fit. The mountings for a 8v and 16v aren't the same.

If it will give more boost i cant say...
But the bigger the turbo the higher the revs before you get boost.

Save up and buy a 2056 or 17xx. Take it to a tuning company of your choice and get a remap. Should probably cost you around 18k maybe a bit more or less depending on the turbo. Do everything right the first time or suffer later.

to convert bar to PSI just multiply with 14.7 or simply type into a google browser window convert 1.7 bar to PSI and you will get an answer.

Just do a basic map/tune on the stock turbo then decide if you want to go the route of "bigger" turbo.
