It has an electric powersteering pump that works in a way similar to the belt driven system.

So this is what the engine bay looks like.. not that this will help much in figuring it out.

This is all I can see under my battery not sure if I'm missing something ... but I can't seem to find the power steering fluid thing..

Look carefully around the battery tray, you should be able to see the green cap of the fluid reservoir.

Hello bud :hi:

See my rides post below when I did a powersteering fluid flush:
http://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic ... &start=150

The post is very clear with pictures. You have to remove your battery to get access to the reservoir.

Hope this helps :hi:

Here is the reservoir. Any work requires the battery to be removed to gain access.

Don't have a powersteering problem at the moment. It was my dad's car and when he drove it he just said it feels a bit stiff but I personally think it's just because he's used to his new car but yeah want to check it since we haven't done that in 3 years... thanks for the help guys.. i think the reason I can't see it is because it's a bit dusty

Look for information on electrohydraulic power steering.

Like Thanas and Panic wrote, it works like a conventional hydraulic system, but the pump is not driven by an engine belt. Rather, it's driven by one or more electrical motors. This means that the system is less wasteful, because the pump can be spun up as needed. When not needed, the electrical motor(s) runs at a reduced speed. (You can actually hear the motor spinning up and down when you put some twist on the steering wheel when the car is stationary. Also, directly after switching the engine off, there is a spin-down hum from the engine bay. That's the pump switching off.

At least one can hear these things on the petrol model (BAH engine) - not sure about the TDI.
