Touran 2.0TDI - Electric Power Steering Problem
Hi All... Im looking for advise on my 2007 2.0TDI. The Power steering is not working at all, the dash light is consistently red. I have taken if for diagnostic test and the auto electrician says that the entire steering rack and electric power steering unit needs to be replaced and a cost of 25-35k!!! Now the diagnostic says "short to ground" but as far as I can see there is no loose wires or fuses blown so I'm thinking perhaps some connection within the unit is loose. I cant understand why it would need to be replace, IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN REPAIR THE POWER STEERING UNIT or offer some other advise? Please

Re: Touran 2.0TDI - Electric Power Steering Problem
They must be totally crazy!
The power steering on the Touran is servotronic, so no hydraulic pump but a servo (electric motor) assisting the steering. The Touran shares its platform with the Golf V, Jetta V, Audi A3 etc. So a decent second hand one should be available from a scrappy for a decent price. Or maybe even Goldwagen.
The motor should also be changeable if that is the problem and not the complete rack.
Also check all the connections, short to ground is the error description in almost all faults. These things are very sensitive to power supply and if there is a bad connection somewhere it will fail.

Re: Touran 2.0TDI - Electric Power Steering Problem
The fault usually says open circuit or short to ground, which means there is basically an open circuit that the management cannot test. So either blown motor or a electrical issue, broken wire or faulty plug.
If the rack works ok you should be able to change just the motor.

Re: Touran 2.0TDI - Electric Power Steering Problem
Thanks guys. Would I be able to have the motor repaired (if it is the motor) or do I have to replace it completely?
