I don't know one member on the forum that use the Single Mass flywheel.

Single mass fly wheel chatters at idle and would drive one crazy thus its not recommended as a daily drive bu good for performance tho

Metsu has a southbend stage 2 clutch and SMF. IIRC he said it had some slight chatter but due to pairing the clutch with their SMF it was reduced.

But agreed I haven't seen any other members with a SMF wheel.

Have been using 1 for the past 7 years and it was a daily drive.

As they say it is noisy but that is up to you.

On idle you will have the noise.
Sometimes its loud, but lots of guys with the 5 speed boxes use the abf smf and they are happy.

Some notes on application pros and cons:

The dual mass systems are designed to transmit less engine vibration to the driveline, and give a better more car like driving experience. They also reduce some of the jarring and stress on the transmission and remainder of the drivetrain. They work fine as long as the engine remains unmodified and the vehicle is not used/abused beyond manufacturers recommendations.

As soon as you start to increase the engine power over stock, or load the vehicle beyond design parameters, you run into problems. Dual mass flywheels are tuned systems and must be matched to the engine torque curve, engine resonant characteristics, vehicle load curves (including axle ratio/tire size calculations). They work by having a set of springs inserted between two rotating masses (thus dual mass). The springs are sized to soak up some of the resonant vibration from the diesel engine under load conditions. A dual mass fly wheel generally also contains an over torque friction release, so if it gets suddenly overloaded, rather than damage the springs, it slips. This works fine as a safety valve, but if it does it much it burns up. In short, overloaded they burn up and the springs get destroyed and they are worse than if it were a single mass FW.

The single mass part WILL tend to transmit more engine pulse (vibration) tot he drivetrain, and will seem a bit rougher. But it is straight forward to design a single mass flywheel and clutch package for pretty much any engine torque curve and vehicle loading combo you can come up with. Drives more like a TRUCK, but has much better reliability at extreme use levels.

BatteryWorldPtaEast wrote:The DMF is gone and is no longer taking the vibrations from the engine away but is now pushing it through to the gearbox ,my single mass flywheel sounds the same.Nothing wrong with the gearbox.

If the release bearing is faulty it will make a noise when you push the clutch in and release it ,not when the clucth is released and gearbox is in neutral.

BatteryWorldPtaEast wrote:Pros :Grips like hell with no fade.
Easy gear changes, like the normal clutch.

Cons: Not easy in peak time traffic ,your leg goes num
The slave cylinder did not last long ,will be changing it soon.
The chatter from the engine can be heard, so the diesel sound is louder.

Other than that it performs well.
Will check for you.

MeTsU wrote:They are very good kits indeed DieselTorqueTdi. Ramster, you most certainly don't want to go much lighter with regards to flywheel, as you'll loose loads of torque. I know of a few guys who have gone for a lighter flywheel, and are very happy. Remember though, that diesels don't like to rev high, and the advantages of having more HP up top due to reving cleaner, are outweighted by the disadvantages, like running bearings. Unless you have a built motor, of course.

From Lmb i think they go as mbt automotive in Johannesburg. Majority of the Big turbo TDi's are running this setup
