TDI - Just swings not starting

Post by SpikePCR »

need some help. I bought a 2003 1.9tdi golf 4 estate. Today I get stuck on Rivonia road. Car just switched off while driving. Only swings. No fault codes appearing on my Torque app. I did do a service over the weekend. Normal filters and also the diesel filter. I have done +- 1000km since. What should I look out for. Thanks in advance. Mileage is on 221000km

according to service records belt was done at 190000km by bruma VW last year May. I did check if diesel was pumping and the one clear pipe from the diesel filter i can see fuel move.

wont necessarily throw a code, its vacuum operated.
it gets stuck with the soot and carbon.

Had a look at the EGR Valve. If I push it in and swing then the swinging has a different noise when egr is in or out. Still swinging. How will I know if that valve is faulty.

do you have the ALH engine? if its a spring loaded type valve you can test with a vacuum pump. remove the intake pipe and apply suction, it should open.. when you release the suction it should fully close... if not you have a problem.
I think its worth a shot to remove that inlet pipe, remove egr, clean up everything and re install and try again.

If no luck we will look elsewhere, but you already said you could see the diesel flowing.

I have the ASV engine. Golf 4 1.9tdi estate. I will quickly clean it and see. Will it help if I do the EGR delete?

hmmm.. dont think the EGR delete will do much now. Get it started first.
Check the ASV inside the intake pipe is not stuck closed - force it open with that actuator on the side and try to start..
When you turn the ignition on do you see the glow plug light illuminate and go off again? If not check relay 109 - known to go bad.
Check your fuel system has not got some kind of airlock, try bleeding it from the filter - there is a T bypass valve there.

Will check relay 109. Glow plug light comes on then goes off after -+ 3s. How would I bleed the system with the t piece on the filter

so the relay is fine then most likely,

sometimes you can remove the bypass valve and have a look at the element inside the filter - if its relatively dry it could be an airlock issue..

other than that check the asv inside the intake pipe and clean everything, check the vacuum lines are good and not perished so as to not actuate the valves

I opened the t piece the filter looks dry I can't see any fuel in it. If I put my finger in then it feels a bit damp. Should I be seeing physical fluid

Get some diesel and fill the fuel filter up. Park the car so the nose is facing down. If the filter is full of diesel, re-insert the t-piece and have a go at swinging the motor and see if it starts. If it doesn't start then, I fear the seals in the mechanical diesel pump may be fubar because of running dry (but this in unlikely). These cars don't have a lift pump in the tank, so you need to get the lines and filter full of diesel before it can suck out the air bubbles that may be in the filter/lines.

Filled the diesel and still no start. Had a guy come out with a full mobile diagnostic and the error was diesel timing off. Mechanic bled the system and still no start. Opened the cambelt cover from the top and saw the belt that looked fine. Took the full cambelt cover off and upon further investigation we saw the cambelt tensioner was broken and the belt was loose at the bottom side :(. And the timing was off by 2 tooth. Hope the head is still fine :). Towed the car to a mechanic to do the cambelt change hoping that the valves are not bent :(. Cambelt was done last year may at VW bruma so no warranty. Mechanic said he will put the cambelt kit in and set the timing and hope it starts.

Mine skipped a good couple and no damage to the valves or the head, very lucky I was. In your case if its only two then you should be ok.

Holding thumbs for you.

Cambelt kitt done and car starts :). No head damage thank God. What causes an oem tensioner to break after 15month and +-30000km

I would imagine over-tensioning the belt would cause premature wear or failure.
