Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
Take it somewhere that can check for exhaust gas in the coolant water. Sounds like head gasket to me.

Thats head gasket bro.TDIKop wrote:Ok still struggling.
Replaced waterpump as suggested by another expert. Cost me over a grand (parts and labour).
No joy.
Water still pushes out through overflow in reservoir.
Note to self. NEVER EVER buy VW crap again.

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
TDiKop, you can't go wrong with a VW diesel vehicle, especially a Golf - once fixed you will enjoy your ride, it is just unfortunate in your situation - trust me I enjoy my 2.0TDi. If you think VW is expensive try BMW and my friend you will be going from "bad to worse" for the lack of a better statement. I was also puzzled at some point with a leak that I could not find (if you read what I have experienced) and I still today appreciate everybody's advice to refrain from quick fixes. I "bit the bullet" and just removed the radiator (myself) and found a "hairline" leak and on the side between the two radiators, fixed it with 'QBond' and "Walla! " I enjoy my TDi every minute of the day - the savings on diesel consumption, power and speed is more than worth it. Besides, you would need 2/3 litres of the G12 coolant @R75.00, excl. at VW which in my opinion is not expensive because remember that the substance of the VW coolant is made especially for your entire cooling system - pipes, engine block, water pump, etc. - so please avoid "shortcuts" and "cost cuts" because in the end it is going to cost you much more - by buying and using cheap / incompatible stuff on your expensive car

My problem is worse. The coolant turn grey to black in the reservoir.BazzyB wrote:TDiKop, you can't go wrong with a VW diesel vehicle, especially a Golf - once fixed you will enjoy your ride, it is just unfortunate in your situation - trust me I enjoy my 2.0TDi. Coolant is pushed back out by the overflow because there is too much pressure in the system. I am looking for a place that can test the coolant and tell me what's in there (maybe some exhaust gas or what ever) that causes so much pressure. When I open the reservoir after a drive a lot of gas comes out and the coolant is pushed up in the reservoir.

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
Workshop quoted min 15K for head gasket replacement. And if the top is shot then way more.
Maybe just buy a recon engine then.

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
I'm guessing (hoping) that the mech is also replacing cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, AND sending the head to engineering for a skim, new seals etc...BazzyB wrote:are you saying 15 THOUSAND RAND for replacement of the head gasket? Even so, cambelt with tensioner average 1.5 to 2grand; water pump (Goldwagen) R652.00 excl.; head skim, labour and other small parts can not be R12,500.

Yes a cool R15 000. Top will be sent to engineers etc. No need for waterpump, thermostat etc as that was replaced not so long ago.BazzyB wrote:are you saying 15 THOUSAND RAND for replacement of the head gasket? WTF? This is from a workshop, not a private mechie. Think I will phone up a private and see what he quotes.
My problem is, I want to be absolutely sure it is the head gasket.

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
Bud had the same problem on our AUDI 1.9tdi. The problem was where you connect the water temperature sensor. that t-piece is plastic and usually get a crack will only leak on pressure. it is a very cheap fix to buy that plastic part and replaced. you will see on the plastic white water marks will show.
With our audi it was at the back i think yours will be on the side

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
Thanks for the tips guys.
Edels: Will check plastic T piece, knowing myself I will probably never find it, but will look.
The idea of the cap sounds worthwhile. Also not too expensive. When I open cap there is a lot of pressure coming out. Don't know if this should be released by the cap automatically.

Re: Golf 5 1.9TDI looses coolant
So had the car at a workshop for brakes and the okes said they will test the coolant for me.
Turns out there's exhaust gas in the coolant.
They phoned around to get quotes for parts and the head job.
Guess what, just the injectors alone will cost 14K.
I cannot believe that it is now practically uneconomical to repair the car myself. This is crap that to repair an engine costs more than what the car is worth.
I will just sell or trade. Maybe someone else can fix it for cheaper.
Buy VW or diesel again. Never.
Diesel engines is just too complicated.
BTW. I smelled the DPF (Diesel particulate filter), the other day, for the first time in months. That fucker was probably also blocked up.
I do not drive the car everyday as it is my wife's car.

So what's that thingy under the car, driver side, that's supposed to burn off the soot and causes that burning smell?
Anyways, this mystery will remain unsolved.
I traded the car and bough a Hyundai ix35. My wife is very happy, but still miss the golf.
