1.9 tdi electrical problem

Post by Scotty_88 »

So driving today and I lost all power steering and the steering wheel light shows on the dash, steering was heavy-scary stuff! Not long after get an abs failure. Pull over, turn ignition off and restart. All is good again. 5 mins later same thing again. Restart and problem goes away, rest of the day all is good.

Now went to my car and central locking won't work, get in and the dash is blank(no power), turn the key and power is back on but computer has reset. I have checked battery voltage, fuses and terminals and no issues as far as I can see. Anyone care to help? Electrical problem for sure but where to start is the question?

Thanks in advance

Also think it the earth cable, from the battery to the body. Just didn't come around to replace it.

Least i am not alone, so what you just not going to fix it? how often do you have this problem? I see on that thread a member reckons its cold weather or something. Pretty much impossible i mean this is Durbs

Mine was maybe once a week. Took the cable off, sanded all the connections on the battery and the body. As well as the connection points on the cable. Also took the pliers and make sure the join between the cable and the connection points is tight.

Yeah going to do the same, get all the connections nice and clean and get better conductivity, perhaps a spray of wd40 too. Thanks for the help. Thought it was in for a new power steering pump(10k). Sheeew...

How old is battery? If its not that earth, its the battery for sure! It might have the right voltage but doesnt have enough "power". Have it tested.

Rather buy a good quality part that will last then buying a cheap part that won't last.

WRT the battery, also check that the terminal is not 'caked up' with acid. The acid goes up the earth strap and causes problems as well.

ok thanks for all the replies guys, very much appreciated :hurray: :hurray:

So earlier went out and had the same issue, hids began to flicker on and off then the power steering light came on and lost all power steering then followed by abs failure light and then handbrake light.Pulled over and turned ignition off and then there was no power, dash went blank. The car had zero juice could not even start it :bang:

Opened up the bonnet and gently tapped the earth cable which runs to the body and bang power back on and everything is hundreds again. So happy as now I know its the earth that is has a bad connection, will sort it out tomorrow and if i don't come right will go visit the stealers

amazes me that that little connection can cause such crap and can be so unsafe(lost power steering round a corner today).

Doubt you have to replace the earth cable, just clean it and fasten everything again. Mine did the above and it was the battery!

Ok so the problem seems to be sorted now, removed the earth strap and sanded the connection points and gave the point on the body a spray with Wd40. The wire itself was pretty dirty/Oxidised to gave it a good clean and wd40. Driven 100km today and all seems good. Thanks to those who helped, saved me lots of cash and time  :hurray:
