Cambelt too tight?

Post by Scotty_88 »

Hi guys,

So had my Cambelt changed last week. I am getting a whine sound which I never heard with the previous Cambelt. The whine is prominent when I rev the car up and the revs drop below 2000 rpm. Should i take the car back to the mech who replaced it as this whine did not occur with the previous Cambelt?

Thanks

Could be one off the rollers that is faulty or the tensioner.

If the roller and tensioner have been replaced and the waterpump is good, I would tend to agree...

Yeah was all replaced. Just took my car to the mech who changed the belt and he said there is no way it's too tight as its self tightening. True? Nothing u can do right now as he said its normal and the sound is the new belt that needs running in.. I think I should take my car elsewhere.

Mine had a slight whine when you revved it in neutral before it was replaced and it became a little louder now. It more of a Whirrr whirrr kind of sound (excuse my description).
I thought it was the new serpentine belt not the cambelt? Now you guys have me worried? If it is too tight we can land up in beeeg sheeet.

That is the external V (or poly) belt that runs the alternator and air con pump.

On inspection. Check for small cracks in the belt or if the pulley has left a wear point in the belt or if it looks old to you. They are relatively cheap and if they snap can lead to big damage if they get caught up in the pulley below. Rather change if not sure. My guess is after say 5 - 6 years, change.

The external V (poly) belt is very easy to change. I even replaced the pulley for the external belt myself (that was a little bit more difficult).

Its true yes. It is spring tensioned within the tensioner. I remember when i did mine a couple of years back that you have to turn the tensioner to a certain mark before you tighten it. It hooks in place and then you turn it till that mark before you tighten it. If that makes sense.

Ha ha true, should show him this thread. I normally use him for smaller jobs, like brakes, oil changes etc. anyway learnt my lesson now. Will be taking the car in next week to get checked over for peace of mind.
