cold start problems

Post by stukkendeTdi »

Hey guys

Ok my jetta 1.9 TDi stuggles to start if it was standing for a while.
I already put in new glow plugs and didn't help much.

I was thinking of changeing the injector seals.
I think its loosing preasure there then the diesel runs back and that's why I struggle to start it.

Has anyone done the seals by them self?

Any advice???

Must be fuel running back

Alex, I can't find that other thread now. There was a guy also battling with a tdi (starting issue) a while ago, a 1.9tdi polo IIRC, was something like a cam sensor or something? Can it be something like that?

cheapest thing to do is to first replace the water temp sensor, and then go the route of replacing the seals on the injectors, also your cam timing ca be slightly out,was your cambelt done at 120000km? and if the injector seals are leaking you should find diesel contamination in the oil pull the dipstick and smell it that should give you a good indication whether or not the seals are leaking

Camshaft position sensor.. It's probably not that but If the other solutions don't work I suggest that stukkendeTdi gets it scanned with VAGCOM as it will pick up the error of the sensor..

If the issue is really more serious then yea maybe water temp sensor or like you said seals but its more then likely not the issue.

First step is to test if it is fuel running back, Park the car with the bonnet at the lowest position on a down hill, even 2 - 3 degree incline will work, Leave it over night then see if the car starts first swing, If not try a bigger incline.. If still not then fuel is not the issue.

If the incline works park the car like you normally would and make sure the problem returns so that you can pin point it to being the fuel running back.

If it does struggle that morning go past Diesel Electric and buy that one way return valve for the R95 install it and all should be hundreds again.

I also recommend testing your battery as TDI's require alot of cranking amp's to start up and batteries takes a big knock in colder weather.

Ps. My neighbours Golf 4 TDI is suffering with the exact same fuel running back and the incline thing worked.

Yeah that was my TDI, it was the camshaft position sensor. But it started fine when cold and after standing for a while. It only struggled to start after short trips and would die out randomly when driving.

Check your diesel pump and check for leaks in the fuel line
If it's broken, upgrade it

Hi , check the Tandem pump on the side of the head ,it must be leaking diesel and letting air in the system.
