As you all know, I don't own an Polo, but this post is about a colleague's worries about the 1.9TDI.

He currently has a 1.6 9N3 Comfortline, but due to problem some where that no-body can sort, he wants to sell the car and buy an 1.9TDI 9N3.

The problem is that this car's fuel consumption went from 14km/l to 10-11km/l, with-out changing his driving style . He actually feathers the the throttle now and is only then seeing 10-11km/l.
And not even the agents, , here in Bloem knows what is causing this.

So he is thinking of buy the TDI, but his main worries his costs. Costs to the injectors, turbo and service.

So I offered to post the following questions on his behalf.

Reason for all these questions is that a family member of his' TD bakkie's motor packed it in a while back and he was shocked at the price of replacing just the turbo and injectors(the actual problem on the bakkie) and now he is a bit scared of buying.

If he could afford a 6R Bluemotion , he would have bought that for the maintance plan, but alas, it is just a bit to far out of his reach.

lower the better. just check if it has full service history. then you know the correct oil was used and if the cambelt was done

check for turbo recall, correct oil used, cambelt done, lower control arm bushes, check clutch for slipping if it was not done

price is above but how long it last depends on how its driven. my original clutch gave in around 185k km. previous owner was a lady driver for +-96k km so not sure how the car was driven then. when the clutch was removed the clutch packs fell off the clutch plate so it was totally gone.

my 05 TDi only lasted 110000kms, My 07 TDi is now on 224000kms and still fine.

Depends on driving style, Mine was replaced at 90K, Pressure plate collapsed but clutch plate was still good, Overall cost from VW was R15K all in. But was covered by Motorplan.

Check recall turbo was done and that cambelt was replaced at 120K km's and that the car has full agent service history

1)recall was late 2005 to 2008 models, VW will tell you once you give them the VIN number,

2)Turbo faulty and software issue as far as I Know

Watch out for rack ends, Turbo should not whine excessively, clutch should not slip when boosting from 2000rpm in the higher gears


In 5 years of ownership and 85 000km I have changed the following under motorplan:

Cluster(10.5k)
Seat clip mechanism for tilting seat(5k)
Interior light unit(button broke) and unit was replaced(2k)
LCA bushes(2k)
1 set of brakes so far(5.5k)
Had an idling issue that made VW change 35k worth of parts even the ECU(In the end the fault was just a faulty earth strap)
Intercooler pipe came loose but cost minimal for a new clamp

What I have had to fork out for in 85k
1 set of tyres(3k)
Cambelt and waterpump service(4.5k)
Annual service(1.9k)
