Change oil = turbo blown?

Post by Yakuza Racer »

So last night i changed the oil on the audi, new oil, new filter...

took the car out and had a good test drive  , this morning started the car and the mother **** turbo is blown, like the car doesn't boost and goes into limp mode and is **** up and smoking and there is this sour smell like when you grinding something and and, im so jus for this car..

anyways my questions:

1) was the strain put on the turbo due to the software and the DP?
2) was it just a kak turbo?
3) why is it that after i changed the oil the turbo went? i used the same oil i have always used...

*ps - i need a loan please!!! :bang: :bang:

**Car is , audi 1.9tdi avant avf 6 speed..

How much mileage has your car done? Software would place extra strain on the turbo as it is requesting more boost, the DP should have relieved some strain as it would have helped lower EGT's. Unfortunately, turbo's are wear and tear items, they will fail at some stage...

How certain are you that it is the turbo?

car as of this morning is 191 000km's...

when we removed the CAT and replaced with DP it was awesome...

now, to fit a bigger turbo or recon and mod the current one? recon is R4600, not sure on price of new one tho', but the recon will be done by Oom Kallie and will mod the turbo (bigger exhaust thingy and something...)

apparently the shaft is VERY loose and the "blades" (?) is damaged...

@1.9T= VERY certain...

Sounds like wear and tear to me, or the shaft snapped? Once you get a bit of movement, blades start touching the housing, waer themselves, go out of balance and well...

P.S. Perfect time to go for something bigger though...

Phone VW if it's the same turbo as we have on the ASZ motors (pTDI S/L) It is something like 3600 or 3800 brand new from the dealers.
Some VW's don't have the cheaper price so you might need to phone VW Hatfield Bryanston

If it were me, and it was my daily, I wouldn't go mad so something like the VNT1749Vb from the SEAT IC TDi or the turbo that carapau used in his SEAT IC TDi but those are both used in transverse fitted engines so may need some work. Your best bet may be what you described above, recon yours so you keep the same housing but going for something larger...

Just check fitment, A4 engine is fitted inline, not transverse like VW's, except for the Passat...

Apparently when a turbo is going or about to go it is very loud ie the shaft and props are touching the inlet but it could be possible the shaft snapped due to high heat etc also they say just be careful nothing went through the system ie metal parts or shavings. They also say it usually puffs smoke or screeches, you will know its blown lol. Most common failure of the tubo is the cooling and lubrication maybe the oil line had a block?

If you loosen or take off one of the boost pipes closer to the throttle body and see any traces of little shavings it could be possible that they went into the motor.Im not sure how bad little shavings will be but I can only imagine large pieces or a fair amount of little shavings will cause a issue but I believe the shavings and pieces are only in bad situations.

That's almost exactly what I did when I replaced the transporters turbo at work but instead of looking at the boost pipe by the throttle I looked at the ore FMIC boost pipe and there where bits of the blown impelers everywhere and a crap load of oil spilled out the pipe as I took it off.
