Hi there, the name's Nathan. Thank you for allowing me to join your club. I do not own a VW, but am interested in purchasing one by next year, thus I wanted to find out as much as I can before committing to anything. I am particularly interested in the Golf 5 TDI and would like to enquire about the PROS and CONS of it. The main reason for being interested in this vehicle is the fuel economy. Just anted to know about common problems, service costs etc. Thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Nathan

I have a Jetta 5 1.9 TDI
Same motor, just a sedan
Economy is great, on long distance, i get almost 1000kms
on everyday commuting, work and back, my wife used to get

service costs are not bad , just depend where you take it
i normally buy the parts from vw and do the work myself

Did the 5 also come in a 2l TDi motor? They where 16v motors if I remember and the earlier models had head issues

Not sure sure about 16v and i have never heard of any jetta motors that
had issues, maybe there was and i never heard about it
Only TDI motors i know of was the sportline polo, but that was turbo and software iirc, motors are pretty rock solid

Re: PROS and CONS of TDI engines
Golf, pretty solid and no major issues.
Polo Sportline had revised software and turbo that resolved the reliability issue.

Re: PROS and CONS of TDI engines
1.9l is a 8v and the 2.0l is a 16v. And yes the 2l did have some issues but to this date I haven't personally spoken to anyone that has had issues with them. If you do some research you will find some more info on that problem. Rock solid cars in my opinion. If I didn't get my sportline I would of looked for a 2l tdi golf five.

Re: PROS and CONS of TDI engines
Interesting that the Jetta 4 1.9 TDI has better fuel consumption than the Jetta 5 2l TDI. You can check that by comparing their specifications. I would assume the main reason is that the Jetta 5 is a bigger car than the Jetta 4, and therefore heavier.
