Post by dirkme »

Hi, anyone have some directions with photos on cleaning the intercooler of a jetta 4 tdi? I heard it can be cleaned without removing it. Thanks

I cleaned out the smic on my Polo once. Removed the smic , flushed the inside with petrol and the outside the fins needs to be scrubbed if they heavy dirty. But as far as I knw it needs to be flushed with petrol so youll have to take it off ..... Dunno if there might be another way to do it

Remove form car. Give to place that will chemically or ultrasonically clean. Reinstall in car.
Norbrake does cleaning.

I would start by removing the fender liner at right front to see cooler in place and then take from there.

I removed the bumper, fender linning, then the 3 bolts on the cooler, plug on top end off cooler, 2 hose clamps. Pour petrol at the outlet (top) and flush out the inlet (bottom) then wash outside with green clean or degreaser... might suggest changing the hose clamps... my clamps lost its tension ...
+- 3hour job... strip, clean and fit.

Not really necessary to remove the bumper but it will be easier to reach the bolts, clamps and wiring when it is off. You can wash the inside with degreaser and rinse out with water. I left mine overnight in degreaser and rinsed it out with a hose pipe.

Rather buy a good quality part that will last then buying a cheap part that won't last.

Does it actually really help cleaning it?

If it is really dirty , you will get slightly colder air and better flow etc , but do not expect a power gain

The inside not really unless it is dripping with oil.

the outer fins filled with bugs, sand and dirt yes, but just be careful not to damage the fins.
