Taking a guess but probably boost at 1.3-1.4 bar and spikes to 1.5 or so bar...

Try doing a two dyno runs on the same dyno, same day, to compare.

Reviving this thread from the dead!

On the VNT1749A, what would you TDI guys recommend at the coast, is MY Crispy sea air better and is it fair to say if I had to run a 1.8bar max here in CPT it is somewhat "safer'' than doing it up in JHB?

As a gauge it seems most guys are running around 1.8Bar

Input is welcome :)

I am guessing you are quoting requested boost, correct?

Max requested is around 1.6 - 1.7 in Jhb (the actual boost spikes to 1.9 - 2.1). So, 1.8 at the coast is really testing the limits.

Like you said, maybe the guys at the coast are getting away with it maybe because in Jhb, the air is thinner and the turbo has to work harder.

Maybe see what the Durban guys have to say?

Yes requested.

Are boost spikes bigger at the coast or jhb. What plays a role in the boost spike?

Condition of your vanes. Sluggish vanes means it takes them longer to respond to a requested position.

Tuner's ability to adjust the N75 map properly.

To a small degree, your driving style. If you mash the pedal down from a steady-state condition, the spike can be larger than if you 'roll into' the pedal.

EGR and exhaust system have an effect but I don't know enough to give a solid opinion on this (yet  ).

Small boost spikes are normal, and are part of PID control. The proper way to answer your question is to get a compressor map for the 1749VA and decide from there. Higher boost is not always better.

Maybe PM sean919 or one of the tuners in DBN as they will have more experience with the 1749VA (or BV39 whatever we have here)

Will probably request that we try get 'requested boost' to 1.6 maybe even 1.7bar.

Mine would do 1.8 bar with a 1.9 spike but that was a few years ago...

Boost isn't everything on the diesels - far from it in fact. More boost only allows you to burn more fuel, so no point in running massive boost without the perfect fuelling to go with it.

I ran 1.8bar for ages without any issues, went to 1.9bar and the turbo lasted a week. It's the spikes that put them through their paces, and due to the minute size of these turbos, they just react too fast to completely damp out big spikes. My opinion is asking any more than 1.8bar constant is asking for trouble.
