TDI poor fuel consumption
Hi guys. If there is already a thread for this will someone please direct me to it?
Recently I've noticed that my car is running a bit heavy on juice and I don't know why.
I know fuel consumption is directly proportional to the right foot but I am taking it easy and not quite getting the figures I always do.
Reckon I should run logs at Trevor or what?
Any advice would be appreciated

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Could very likely be right foot or traffic conditions.
When last did you change your air filter?

Was nice to meet you guys today, Marco and BigMig! Airfilter will be changed with the next service, think I will get a serviceable one though. Highway cruising and clow cruising relfected higher consumption though. I am sure after a service it'll be down again.

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Driving down Zambezi the other day in 5th it wouldn't drop much below 7.8l/100km, and this was at cruising speed. I have also noticed that I am struggling for good economy on the long trips, and on those trips I always drive nicely.Neuk wrote:+1Uncle Nunda wrote:what is your consumption?

Speed? Load? Road conditions? Weather conditions? There are a myriad of factors affecting fuel consumption...BradTDI wrote:Driving down Zambezi the other day in 5th it wouldn't drop much below 7.8l/100km, and this was at cruising speed. Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Lol - My bad!
Alright, it was just me in the car, cruising at 85km/h, empty car, in 5th gear, dryish road considering the rainy season, aircon on 1 and moving traffic, hence mostly staying in 5th at 85km/h. Under normal circumstances, driving the same road at the same time with the same traffic, I drive this route a lot, would see me doing say 6.0l/100km
Thinking back I am sure the car could just use a service as it is due within 4k km, so once the filters have been changed I will report back to everyone

I rarely trust the instantaneous fuel consumption of teh trip computer although I do use it to see how I am consuming fuel. Have you noticed increase fuel use from tank to tank? It is a better measure in my opinion than the instantaneous reading...
P.S. A service could help...

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Yup, definitely noticed that I've done less km per tank than I always do. And I always fill with 50l (when the tank is empty) rather than topping up and trying to measure on R200 worth of fuel and so on. I will try a nice econo tank before my service and after the service and see if it helps. I'm sure it will though.Neuk wrote:Mmm...BradTDI wrote:Lol - My bad!

Keep us updated with the fuel consumption before and after the service. Mine is also a bit heavier on fuel lately.

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
When I first got my IC tdi it was damn heavy on diesel, not sure what the figures was though. After giving it a service and cleaning the MAF sensor with alcohol, consumption dropped to about 7.2 avereage on short trips to work and back. On long trips it drops below 7.

7.8 for that speed cruising is high
If I cruise 100 on clocks my computer would drop to 4.X or even high 3.X
Normally 140 on the clock 9 128GPS speed, and getting high 5.X's or 6.X if there is a lot of up hills

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
I know my car and I assume you are the same so if you same the consumption is higher i am inclined to agree with you.
I would have the service items you mentioned replaced and also check for any DTC's.
Boost leak could also push up consumption.
Any excessive black smoke on start up or WOT ?

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Hi Guys,
I have also noticed a moerova change in consumption. I have a stok 96kw TDI and usually get R1390 ks from jhb to ballito and back. done the trip 7 times and got almost identical readings with the car loaded, unloaded, passangers and no passangers. This time it was just my wife and I and some luggage. we took a slight detour this time, to the nottinghamhill road.
I ended up getting 765ks on a tank. then filled up with 50ppm again in ballito before our return journey and got also just under 800ks. The car felt marginally down on power, not drastic.
In 1st and 2nd gear it still hauls ass. but accleration from 80km is a little slack.
I do a full service every 7500. the car is currently on 17100km. the turbo has never been replaced, neither has the clutch or any major part.
Possible relevant info : The release bearing and RHS front wheel bearing have just started going. I have got a new sachs complete CK and Front wheel bearing. I Have a new Garret turbo waiting at the supplier should I need it.
is there anything I should check first before doing the turbo? Or does anyone know what the possible cause of the high fuel consumption is?
Thanks is advance

If I cruise 100 on clocks my computer would drop to 4.X or even high 3.X
Normally 140 on the clock 9 128GPS speed, and getting high 5.X's or 6.X if there is a lot of up hills

Re: TDI poor fuel consumption
Sorry for bring a old post back to life,
But what kind of fuel consumption can I expect to see on my 2006 1.9 Polo TDI Sportline (Bone stock minus 63mm DP & Exhaust)
I put in 53l unleaded and I'm gona check how far it can go
www.um.co.za Says:
Highway 4.3
Fuel Consumption - Urban 6.8
Consumption Annual Average 5.2
is um.co.za Correct ? what is your experience ?
Have had the car for less than a week so everywhere is a race My foot is VERY heavy !!!
(was joking about the unleaded btw )
