(3rd) Lapiz Blue VW Golf 7R - Detailed by Lawrence

Post by lawrence »

Sadly the front end of of this car had been subjected to a repaint and the body shop really left these areas in a shocking state and so the objective was to sort these areas out and then get the rest of the paint (which wasn't too bad) mostly (it's still a daily driver) swirl free, and then protect everything, and give the interior a light clean up.

As there was no work to be done on the engine bay the next dirtiest area to clean was the wheels and undercarriage.

Before

During

Fender wells : Pressure rinse / Carchem APC @ 1:5 / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carpro PERL @ 1:2
Tyres : Pressure rinse / Carchem APC @ 1:5 / dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carpro PERL neat x twice
Wheels and brake calipers : Pressure rinse / Valet Pro Billberry @ 1:5 / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carchem Revolt / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carpro Tar-x / Carpro PERL neat x twice / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carpro Hydro

The rest of the vehicle was then cleaned and included all the often overlooked areas such as inside the fuel filler area, in and around badges or emblems, inside door shuts etc.

Before

During

Pressure rinse / Auto Super Snow Soap / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure rinse / Carchem Luxury Shampoo + 2 buckets + lambswool wash mitts

Image

The paint and glass was then decontaminated - Carchem Revolt / Dwell + Agitate / Pressure Rinse / Carpro Tar-x / Shield Heavy Duty Clay + Gyeon Clay Lube @ 1:1

With the paint now free of all the above surface dirt and contamination it could be properly inspected for below the surface defects. Multiple paint thickness readings were taken with the repainted panels being mostly around 220µ to 280µ and the OEM panels around 100µ to 130µ and after multiple test spots on each type of paint (repaint vs OEM) I settled on the following combos in the following areas:

Bonnet and Roof: Menzerna SHC300 + blue Lake Country hybrid foamed wool pads x 2 sets / Menzerna PF2300 + orange Lake Country hybrid pads
The bonnet was riddled with areas like this that from a bit of a distance looked like dull patches where there was no clear, but in reality were sanding marks and pigtails that were not polished out at the body shop.

The interior was vacuumed and then wiped down using ONR and the leather protected using Gyeon Leather Coat.

The glass was cleaned using Meguiars Perfect Clarity glass cleaner.

The exterior plastics and rubbers were cleaned with Shield Heavy Duty Vinyl and Rubber cleaner and dressed using Carpro PERL.

Here are a few pictures of the completed car.

Yeah sure... so a) ONR can effectively be used much like any 'interior quick detailer' and I quite like it compared to other products which tend to leave a more 'shiny' surface behind and b) a full deep clean of all the interior surfaces was not part of the scope of this detail, so in this case I simply used some ONR to give the interior a light clean (essentially removing the topical dust/dirt) and did this on the leather too.

Magic, thanks for the tip. That's why I love ONR, its so versatile...

Pleasure. Totally agree with you on this.

Things I use it for fairly often
Rinseless wash
Clay lube
Quick detailer
Glass cleaner
Water softener in a regular wash
Interior detailer

I used it at clay lube dilution. So 2 oz to 1 gallon or for the rest of the world, pretty much 30ml into 3.8l of water, or 8ml per liter of water.
