Hadida sh*t destroying my paint!!

Post by Wolf Mk2 16V »

Hi Guys,

Due to a very prolonged building project, Sieben is sleeping outside. I had to choose between leaving the mk2 gti or mk7 outside and I feel that a new car will hold up better to standing in the elements. Problem now is that I have hadidas nesting all over the place and the last batch of **** was very corrosive to my baby's paint. The spots actually look like there is cracking inside the clear coat. I have doubts if any polish is going to be able to protect from this sort of damage and also have apprehensions about letting a car wash loose on my car and do some sort of coating. Guess another option is to cover the car every night, but again I feel this will have cons too due to covering a dusty car.

What are my options?! Beside building faster of course

They are a pest. I'm also doing renovations at my house, and they have a party on top of my newly built main bedroom roof. Their sh!t is all over my brand new painted roof, plus they wake us up when they start their roof party at 5 in the morning.
I'm going to put my Jack Russels on the roof one morning, they should have fun chasing these bastards away.

Anyways, back to your question, I would send the car to one of the detailers on the forum. They have the right products to firstly clean the car properly and secondly to give it the proper protective coating.

Honestly, I don't think it's a simple as saying newer paint will hold up better. It's more about which car do you want to expose to a higher risk of possible bird etching.
Wolf Mk2 16V wrote: Problem now is that I have hadidas nesting all over the place and the last batch of **** was very corrosive to my baby's paint. The spots actually look like there is cracking inside the clear coat.
That's where the acid has eaten into your clear coat (the top level of see through paint over the color [base] coat).
Wolf Mk2 16V wrote:I have doubts if any polish is going to be able to protect from this sort of damage
Polish is an abrasive substance - think liquid sandpaper - designed to remove some of the clear coat to 're-level' it, and in so doing, any scratches, or other defects like etching from bird bombs, are remove.

Protection comes in the form of waxes, sealants and coatings. To try and simplify what are very muddied waters when it comes to the make-up and performance of these products, you can think of them likes this:

Waxes - "natural" carnuba wax + oil based, make paint look 'wet', wipe/spray on - wait a bit - wipe off, last 2 to 3 months
Sealants - "man-made" polymers that 'cross link' during curing to provide a more durable layer of protection, wipe/spray on - wait a bit - wipe off, last 4 to 8 months, more 'resistant' to the elements than a wax
Coatings - "man-made" quartz/silica, resin-based to provide a even more durable layer of protection, [application varies immensely, with some through 'certified detailers' only] last 1 to ....x? years, more 'resistant' to the elements than a sealant.
Wolf Mk2 16V wrote:and also have apprehensions about letting a car wash loose on my car and do some sort of coating.
IF you care about your car(s), I wouldn't let a car wash do anything, ever. Learn to do it yourself. Go read here to start with viewtopic.php?f=50&t=180689
Wolf Mk2 16V wrote:Guess another option is to cover the car every night, but again I feel this will have cons too due to covering a dusty car. What are my options?! Beside building faster of course
This is not a bad option considering you almost know the bird bombs are coming. I reckon even a professionally installed coating runs the risk of etching in the long run. I'd get the car clean (maybe you need to look into rinse-less washing [shout back if you have questions], stick it under a cover and protect it... I'm still a little confused if its the new car that has the etching, or the one being built which is in the garage?  But the important thing to remember is don't go trying to have the etching removed now, if you are still going to be exposing the car to the same 'ish without having done something to increase the protection.... clean the paint up once... because each time you do.... some of it disappears :hi: :hi: :hi:

In my experience, scratches inflicted through poor car washing - which I imagine would be no worse than those inflicted by a cover, in the worst case scenario - require the removal of less paint, than trying to get rid of etching. You'll come across some pics in the guide I linked above, and some more on the last car I detailed if you want to look here viewtopic.php?f=50&t=198918

So you almost have to choose the lesser of 2 evils  :fear:

Some real 'match-box' numbers are

Wax R80/year
Sealant R150/year

You could start 'DIY-ing' either of these options now, and continue you to do so if/after you have the paint 'corrected'. You looking at wiping some product on 1 to 6 times a year depending on the product you choose, letting it sit a bit (they all vary) and wiping it off.

Coating R1500/year upwards

There are some 'over-the counter' type coatings available. Generally speaking:
- a clean and well lit workspace is required for application.
- you will need to wash with a specific shampoo
- you will need to periodically (they vary) "top" the coating with a 'less-durable' "coating-based" spray-sealant

Professional coatings come with an increased durability/warranty, and increased cost - the market is extremely varied so you will need to do you own homework.

In either case, the application of a coating to 'non-corrected' paint is NOT recommended

A decent quality car cover - ?

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks so much for a comprehensive answer!

Looks like I'll need to do some homework the weekend...

How long will I need to be without my car if you did the detailing?

Its a pleasure bud

Well.....typically Friday night to Sunday evening, BUT, I am in Durban.... so you'd need to make arrangements to get here.... and, I am typically booked up a few months in advance, so you need to plan well ahead.

These species are a true annoyance.
I am having the same problem at my place. and there is no construction under way or even anything that would make my place their habitat.
at my place they only appear in a pair
Their **** messes up all the cars in my yard.
My dog did kill one of these buggars a few months ago, as they eat her dog food everyday.
so there was one,, and all of a sudden there is 2 again. fml

Here lies the problem, your home has become a food source.

I had the same issue, I give my dog an hour to eat then take away their food. No leaving unwanted food which will attract any bird.
At first the dogs were like WTF? but now they know and eat enough.
Any extra is put away. IF you leave excess food they will always come back to eat, between that the birds have a field day.

I find Collinite paste waxes more resilient to bird crap than I do any other wax or sealant. Resilient not bird crap proof though. Also CarPro Essence topped with Carpro Reload does seem to help too, either option assists if the crap is removed sooner rather than later and just washes/wipes off most of the time without etching or staining. I find pidgeon crap to be more acidic than any other birds and my combos above seemed to have held well enough there. Coatings on the other hand are generally much thinner and softer than the actual clear coat measuring 1 micron or less and are thus more susceptible to etching than the actual clear. However any option you choose will be the sacrificial barrier between the crap and the paint and certainly better than having no protection at all.
