Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) FAQ:

Questions
US-spec DSG
Euro-spec DSG

1
When completely stopped (i.e. at a traffic light), does the car "creep" as soon as you let off the brake, or does it only start to move forward once you start pressing the gas pedal (after releasing the brake pedal)?
YES - creeps like a traditional automatic
YES - creeps like a traditional automatic

2
If you keep the left foot on the brake, can you still rev the engine "freely" (without a gear being engaged):

a) in Drive mode?
NO
NO

b) in Sport mode?
NO
YES (ESP off)

c) in Manual mode?
NO
YES (ESP off)

3
When stopped on an ascending hill, and trying to slowly go forward (so in 1st gear), do you have to use the handbrake to avoid rolling backwards? or can you use left foot on brake pedal, right foot on gas pedal, and dose it just right to avoid rolling back?
This question also applies to a descending hill, trying to go backwards (so in reverse gear).
Car will not roll back (or forth) at all if using the left-foot braking technique
Car will not roll back (or forth) at all if using the left-foot braking technique

4
While driving in Manual mode, does the DSG actually "queue" the shifts as you request them, and actually executes the shifting when it is safe to do so (RPM-wise)?
YES
YES

5
While in Drive or Sport mode, can you still hit the shift paddles or shift knob to force shifts?
YES, display then shows gear #
YES, display then shows gear #

6
When in Manual over-ride mode, does the DSG revert to Drive or Sport mode by itself?
YES, reverts to D/S after ~15 seconds
NO, stays in Manual till +/Off paddle held

7
While in Manual mode, does the DSG downshift for you if you accidentally slow down in a high gear and forget to change gears yourself, thus causing the engine to spin at a lower RPM than idle? (i.e. stay in 3th, come to a stop, causing the engine to go < 700 RPM)?
YES
YES

8
Does the DSG automatically blip the engine throttle (to match revs) during downshifts:

a) in Drive mode?
NO
NO

b) in Sport mode?
YES
YES

c) in Manual mode?
YES
YES

9
Assuming ESP has been turned OFF, does launch control (left foot on brake pedal, right foot on gas pedals, release the brake pedal and keep the gas pedal to the floor) work:

a) in Drive mode?
NO
NO

b) in Sport mode?
NO
YES

c) in Manual mode?
NO
YES

10
When coming to a red traffic light a few hundred yards away, can you "coast" and make the transmission open both clutches so that the engine is running at idle (700 RPM)?
YES - move shift lever to Neutral
YES - move shift lever to Neutral

11
When driving at a constant speed with cruise control enabled, does the gearbox execute a downshift if the "accelerate" (+) feature of the cruise control is requested for a few seconds while in a high gear:

a) in Drive mode?
NO
NO

b) in Sport mode?
YES
YES

12
When driving at a constant speed in Manual mode with cruise control enabled, does the cruise control automatically turn OFF if an upshift or downshift is request via:

a) the shift paddles?
NO
NO

b) the shift knob?
NO
NO

13
How can you tell what gear the transmission is currently in, if Drive mode is selected?
Place the shift knob in Manual mode (+/-)
Place the shift knob in Manual mode (+/-)

14
If Drive or Sport mode was overridden by the driver, having hit the shift paddles or shift knob to manually change gears, how can the 15~20 second timeout be avoided in order to resume automatic shifting immediately?
Put the shift knob in Manual mode (+/-) then back to D/S
Hit the +/Off paddle for more than 2 seconds

15
How can I get the best acceleration possible in Manual Mode while cruising in 6th gear on the highway?
Mash the gas pedal all the way into the kick-down area. The transmission will automatically drop three or four gears!!

16
Sometimes, when in Manual Mode, downshifting a gear to accelerate faster seems to cause some hesitation (lack of acceleration) for a second or two. How can this be avoided?
Push on the gas pedal before downshifting. This gives the transmission time to prepare a lower gear.

Hi Shaun,

Haven't got the foggiest idea. I only drive an old Mk2 gti so I press in the clutch pedal, select the next gear with my dumb left hand and release the pedal. Not to complicated but kind'a difficult after a few cold ones

Sorry, can't help sorting out U're "modern technology"
