Multi V belt trouble

Post by grahamwebberjhb »

Hi all,

I have a 2005 Polo TDI 1.9 it has +- 245000 km ( the TD are red, apparently that means something... yes I am a newbie) and I drive like a granny.

I have a perpetual problem with my multiV belts, I have been through a number of them, generally they last about 6 months. I have changed tensioners and pulleys, I have had to changed the alternator as well.

I assume there is something else in the system that is either out of alignment or out turning freely enough. but I have taken it to a number of garages and service places but they all promise it is fine.

Is there anything I can check, or can anyone recommend a mechanic in Johannesburg or Midrand that know more that a service centre does?

thank you,

Graham

Have you replaced the bearings

If not then take the belts off and spin the pullies. You should listen for a soft grinding. And if they seem to be slowing down relatively fast. This indicates that there is resistance in the bearings and this the belts will have to pull harder. Get hotter and last for much shorter.

Also what are the quality of the belts you are buying. And what is the tension on the belts.

Note. The pullies should spin for quite a while on there own if the bearings are still good.

I once worked on a car that the client said also chewed belts and they couldnt find anything. There was a small rock wedged/stuck inside the crank pulley that kept screwing up the belt. Check all the pulleys for any debris that might be stuck

@VAG fan the belt seem to be heat damaged. they blacken get brittle.

@Juan the dealer. I have changed the pulleys a while back and they still seem to be turning freely. I have been buying whatever cheap belts goldwagen sales person recommended. could you suggest a better brand.

thank you for the responses.

Firstly, I would check the entire area for dirt that could cause any issues.
Secondly, make sure that you are replacing all applicable pulleys, rollers, idlers, tensioners, etc. along with the belt.

I had a similar issue on my '05 B6 A4 where I forgot to change a tensioner and the new cambelt nearly shredded itself a few months down the line.

But did you change all of them. You could have skipped the problem one.
