Karting at iDube Sunday 06 April 2014 - its a go!!!!!!

Post by lawrence »

This thread refers: http://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic ... 4&t=162300

We are thinking of hosting a full day's racing at iDube, with us rocking up in the morning, having a braai or something for lunch and leaving in the afternoon.

We would need to pre-register for this event to secure final numbers and make a booking at iDube and so gauging actual interest is going to be important to ensure this one is planned properly.

We would like to see people split up into teams and have some form of knockout competition over the course of the day. We just need to ensure that everyone gets sufficient seat time for their entry fee, so we are not sure what the best format should be? An alternative may be an individual knockout competition, but here unfortunately weight will become a contentious issue.

Entry fee into the event will be at a reduced rate for paid up members.

We have been to iDube before - see that event's details here: http://www.vwclub.co.za/forum/viewtopic ... 5&t=148325

Big ticket items to get settled in order to plan this one are:

1. How many people would be interested (the more there are, the less the cost per head)
2. When would you like to do something like this? We will obtain a list of available dates from iDube and post them up here ASAP
3. Any ideas on how to structure the 'racing' for the day, so that everyone gets some seat time, and there is still some fair competition.

Please start throwing in your ideas......

Im in.
Run a format whereby you start with 4 heats of 6 or so
top 3 to next round, bottom 3 to losers round
then 2 heats of 6 for winers top 3 go through, 6 guys in
2 heats for loosers top 3 go through, 6 guys in

then 2 heats of 6 - top 3 go through, others are knocked out
final of 6 guys.

Not sure I understand your question.

There are karts for hire, which, depending on the numbers, we will hire out x number of them to run our day with....

Well the last time we went, karts were R850 per hour per kart to hire.

So as an example, if we hire 4 karts and roll in with 4 teams of 4 drivers, you will each get a 15 minutes seat time (enough to give you a serious workout) for R212.50.

Of course, this is very dependent on the numbers we pull for the day, and how we structure it.

We did this before as the VW club and it was great..

Those karts are damn scary and nothing like mall karts..

Only thing is they need to turn up the boost for going on the steep uphills..

Also I heard Idube was being auctioned so not sure how thats going to affect things.. will find out and confirm..

We should be able to get a good crowd for this and remember the more guys the cheaper it becomes.. 15-20 min in a kart is plenty.

Lets get this thread going and put down names..

I think we will look at trying to get them to lift the restrictors off, although even with them on those karts were pretty damn fast.... but I do concede that the 1 big uphill posed a bit of a problem for some of our larger members.

And Grant with all the weight you have lost lately there is a good chance you can make it up the hill, even with the resrictors in :driving:

Sorry to raise an old thread but did you guys end up doing this event?

I've recently been to iDube driving those 125cc karts and they are something else! 130km/hr down straight, 4.5g through thunderdome (sweeping double apex corner at the bottom) and reving to 13000rpm.

I tell you i could not breathe through some of the corners due to the lateral G's, and had to catch my breath down back straight!

In terms of that tight right hander with the exit up the hill yes it needs a bit of momentum to get back into the powerband going up. The engines do have adjustable powervalves for more tq low down to help pull through. The trick to that corner is also NOT to apex it due to a dip which bottoms the kart. Brake early and take it a bit wide and accel through which generally see's good momentum on the exit...

Yes good workout, eina hips, bruised ribs, eina back, stiff neck sore arms!

Would do it again anyday...
