Cluster/Dash lights on Citi (new dash) - Complete - PICS

Post by SinWolf »

Hi,

Does anyone know how to take out the cluster/instrument panel of a new citi golf ?? I can't see any screws from the outside. And is it possible to change the colour of the instrument panel lights ???

Thanks

Anything is possible with enough time/money/patience.
You'll probably have to remove half the dash before you can remove the cluster.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have NOT offended.
Please be patient.
I will get to you shortly...

Be very careful when doing so.
I removed the cluster on my previous golf3 without breaking anything, but the thing wouldnt stop rattling after I re-installed it.

I dismantled a fair amount of that dashboard - wouldnt do it again on a new car because of the rattles.

thanks for the warning, but I need to strip the complete interior anyway, cause I have to install sound deadening material !! The sound deadening material should also help to prevent rattles...

So,

I finally stripped the dash, only to find out that the Citi Golf does not use the normal push-in bulp for the cluster display.

I now ordered 30 (YES 30) SMD (service mount device) LED's to be soldered onto the cluster PCB and I need to remove the green LED's.

This is DEFINITLY not a job for an inexperienced electronic hobbiest.

I will post pics as soon as the conversion is done (and I'm sure I'll be the only one driving a new dash Citi Golf with cluster lights other than green.)

P.S. I'm changing the colour to blue, to fit the Pioneer HU.

I can assure you... I don't think there is a anyone that will be willing to do this! I did it myself, but there were a lot of complications. I had to modify the LED circuit on the original circuit board to make it work, cause the blue led's usess double the voltage than the original green led's.

If you look at the first pic on the left side, I even changed the rear window demister switch light.

I'm thinking of changing the needles for the rev counter and speedo to red, cause the needles use their own led's. I can actually make it any colour, but red wil fit in just fine !

Been thinking about doing this for a while myself.

Haven't found the time/inclination to even start :?

Doesn't look like a 1 day job either.

What sort of changes did you make to the circuit boards?

Details man! Details!

Tell us how you did it...

Well, I modified the circuit using bridging wires, and cutting the tracks on the circuit board in order to change the series circuit, to a partly series/parallel circuit in order to supply enough voltage for the blue LED's

Sounds like you butchered the circuit

I have an old dash in my cab so I don't reckon I'd need to do as much as you did, I'd be using the diffused blue LED's and not the water clear ones like you did.

Yes, the old dash is MUCH easier, you just buy the blue LED dash lights from autostyle, and Bob's your uncle... But the new dash is very complicated.

The changes I did on my circuit board is reversable 8) ...not that I would change it back to the old Nokia green baclight...
