Old equipment. Is it worth installing

Post by Reegz »

My cousin gifted me his car sound many moons ago when he decided to settle down and become a responsible person (i.e.: he got hitched).

It's been sitting in storage forever and a day and I just now discovered it.

My question. Is it worth installing this stuff in my Golf or should I just write it off?

Items in question. Rockford Fosgate Punch G200a, Infinity Kappa 6.5" splits (ifi7066) and a pretty-big-sub-in-a-box.

I figure I have the stuff, and may as well use it instead of letting it waste away any further.

Will it still be good to go after all this time? Would I be better served sticking with my stock sound system instead? If I do fit these components would I definitely need to change the head unit?

Questions questions.. and questions.

Howdy bud. Rockford is one of the best around. I can almost promise you it will still work perfectly. And also it is going to blow your socks off with big, deep, powerful bass. Or maybe I should rather tell you that it is rubbish, and that I will come and collect it to take it to the rubbish dump to save you the effort.....

The kappas are nice splits so definitly worth the upgrade if they are in good condition. Same goes for the amp.
Headunit does not need to be changed. With a decent hi-low converter all will be well.

Yeah, they've been stored pretty securely. No visible dust or moisture etc so in that sense they've been treated fairly.

Would there be any natural time-based deterioration on internal components?

You mention hi-low converter. What's this?

Yeah, so there's a bit of a backstory here that goes back to my Polo.

The useless sh1ts at Gauteng Sound stuffed up the interior just days after I got the car. Matters not that the car was second hand; was still in very good condition and it was hard-earned money.

Anyhoo, point of the story is that since then I'm wary of letting people work on my cars unnecessarily to the point where I now doubt whether I need to do this or not. The Golf is in great condition - inside and out - notwithstanding that it is also a second hand car.

I'd love to have the kit fitted but I prefer my car in good condition a lot more. So, guess what I'm saying is who are the reputable installers that I should be talking to?
