Running standard speakers off 4 channel

Post by DJ7 »

So, I got my hands on an Audio Bank AAB-4.120 channel amp. Was thinking of having it installed and having my standard speakers running off it so long. The idea is to just be able to get better clarity from it and not having them play super loud. I have already upgraded my HU to a Pioneer AVH-195DVD unit. There is already a Infinity reference 10" sub in a sealed enclosure running off a Phoenix Gold RX250.1 monoblock. So the speakers are currently loud enough off the deck, but would like to just play around with the clarity.

Later on, I will upgrade all the standard speakers as well. But in the meantime, considering that I have the 4 channel already, I wanted to do the above. What are your thoughts on this?

The OEM speakers will automatically sound a lot better when powered by an amp instead of the headunit.
I know a few people who have done what you want to do, and left the OEM speakers and just added a sub and nothing wrong with the SQ in any of their cars.

Shot a lot man. That is exactly what I want. So looks like I will be installing the amp this weekend then.

Since you already have the sub, make sure you run the front speakers on a high pass. 100-120Hz would be about perfect and you will get a lot more clarity from the fronts.

Will also be a quicker job when you upgrade the speakers later on, if the amp and wiring is all already there and ready
It is an ingenius solution to a problem that should have never existed in the 1st place...

Would I not lose out on the mid bass then? Never mentioned earlier it is a 3 way setup in front.

Exactly the idea. Sacrifice now to benefit later.

100hz is really high. With the 7" midbass on the mk5 i think 70hz to 90hz would be a better bet

Thanks man. Which is the reason why I asked. Because I don't want to lose out on the midbass. Want that complete sound.

Easiest way to set hpf is mute the sub and start at 90hz. If it sounds good at higher volumes then try a lower frequency. Repeat until you hear distortion then just set it a bit higher than that point.

Also rather use the crossovers on the headunit insead of the amp.

Was intending to rather use the crossovers on the HU. Thanks for the tips.

Whoever does the install, needs to be really careful as the Audio Bank AAB-4.120 is way too powerful for OEM speakers.

depends on how loud is your loud , Might be better off with aftermarket speakers as the speakers will blow after a certain point of volume.

Have to agreed , there's a difference but this is mainly due to the built in crossover of the amplifier.

Doubt you'll be able to give the speakers more power, instead you can fine tweak it.

So, the idea is that I am not going to turn the amp up too much but more have it for the crossover functionality. So on the deck, my loud is 25-28, that is out of a max of 50 on the head unit I think. Never gone full blast. 30 onwards, the speakers start to distort. Also only play at that volume when I am alone really. If they do blow it is just an excuse for me to replace them too.

Fine tweaking is exactly what I want.
