Hi Guys,
I am prepping for a bit of wrenching, cleaning etc over the Christmas break and one definite project is to upgrade Wolf's sound.
Here is what I have so far...
Head unit
Kenwood KIV900BT
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-IPNKlm61k ... 0.html?o=n
coolest head unit I think I've ever seen! Nice and understated for an 80's interior but packed with tech!
Rear speakers
JBL GTO 6429 6x4's
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-OhSSUHuWA ... O6429.html
What I need to get...
Active Sub under seat
Audiobank
https://www.autostyle.co.za/car-audio/s ... l-amp.html
The only reason for considering this unit is that it seems to have 2 channel amplification too (I need this as will become clear)
Door speakers front
JBL Club 5020 5.25"
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-ovHoiqWxe ... -5020.html
Dash top speakers
JBL GX302 3.5"
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-crM5guNRo ... X302.html- reasoning is that these are a perfect fit for the existing bracket and is a nice way to get more sound (compared to a tweeter modified to fit)
The objective here is not to shake the car apart with bass but to have as rich as possible sound without molesting the car. I listen to Rock and Metal, so booming bass is not suitable anyway. A sub box is also out of the question because the car has to remain practical - I like nice weekend runs and luggage space is important. Invisibility is also non negotiable.
I have four questions:
1) Which speakers will you play off the powered sub's amp? (rears or doors)
2) Using two way speakers in the dash top, would you use a cross over to "filter" some of the bass going to them to maybe protect their likely inability to reproduce bass, or do I just use all off the radio's juice to get as much sound as possible?
3)For some unknown reason the aerial hole is on the drivers fender!
I would like to consider a powered/hidden unit to not have to use the fender hole. A bee sting is not an option as I am not doing that to Wolf,
and roof lining removal is also a no go. Anyone have any experience of these aerials?
4) How important/beneficial is door sound deadening?
Thanks guys!

Re: Sound - Mk2 Advice
I'm going to guess that the 3-channel part was a typo, looking at the pics in your link i don't see the 2 channels you would use of the front speakers.
I would go for a quality under-seat sub if you're not looking for a pavement pounder, but then add another small amp under the other seat to power all the door speakers from. Also a quality split system will work better than fiddling with separate dash-top speakers.
In my mk2 i had a split system up front, but the tweeters were mounted in the factory dash slots under the original speaker grills so it looked stock. For bass i built a spec box in the boot but kept it flat and long to take up minimal space, and then built a sort of false wall thing pretty much across the width of the boot, to hide the sub/amp/box i had there, and made longer parcel shelf strings, so even with the boot wide open, you couldn't see any sound.

Thanks Marshal,
Did you use 6x4 in the parcel tray shelves and does the woofer at least fill in on the tiny speakers?

Re: Sound - Mk2 Advice
no never found a set of 6x4s that i liked, so kept it simple with just a sub and a split system. When i was using an 8" sub in a sealed box it was great for metal and it was a nice balance. Also had a box with a 12" in (also sealed) which still sounded good but gave me a bit more scope for other genres of music.
i also played with a spare parcel shelf and 6x9s but they only really gave a bit of rear fill to the sound and made my life easier by not having to cut up the original rear door cards.

Budget?
I'd recommend you take a car to Hygrade and Uncle Suli will sort you out with a basic Gladen system. Something like a Gladen splits, an M-line amp and RS10 sub and still have access to a spare wheel and bootspace.

Re: Sound - Mk2 Advice
A good quality split system in the front and sub woofer in the boot with a 4ch amp will sound the best bud and a set of 6x4 is a waist of your time as they rattle and sound crap in the parcel tray shelves. if you want rear fill add 6x9's to a aftermarket parcel shelve. So you will run the fronts and sub off the 4ch amp and the 6x9 off the rears on the radio, but get good quality products like Hertz, Audison, Focal, DLS, JL exc..

Re: Sound - Mk2 Advice
Oh and to get back to your questions it will be very beneficial to do sound deadening in the door as it stops the panels vibrating and make your mid bass stronger. Personally i would not go for the power aerial to hide as they don't last, I would just install the fender aerial even if it is on the driver side. With a split system system of component system you get passive cross overs so no need to add it in and with the speakers you are considering the have built in capacitors that split the highs and lows no need to add crossovers. I will not use the sub you have mentioned.
