VW CC 2.0 TDI Bluemotion RCD510 with Dynaudio but no iPhone

Hi guys,

I just bought a new CC and was told that I would be able to control tracks etc. on my iPhone from my steering wheel.

I turns out I have not been able to find a way to do this. The dealership is very attentive, but rather uneducated in the matter.

They firstly installed an after market OEM iPod cable (which is not recognized by my iPhone 4).

Next they installed a cradle between the seats in the storage compartment which charges the phone and presumably offers an antenna connection, but it does not provide audio input into the head unit.

Bluetooth for telephone and for audio streaming works fine, but the sound quality is horrible for audio and causes distortion. Bluetooth does not allow me to change tracks either.

As far as I can tell the vehicle is missing the MEDIA-IN connector. (it does have the AUX-IN).

It would seem the missing parts are:
Part no. 5N0 057 342 for MEDIA-IN
Part no. 000 051 446 C For iPod / iPhone

I would appreciate if anyone can confirm or correct my assumptions.

I would also like to understand if installing the RNS 510 would make any difference, how much does the RNS510 cost?

Thanks,
Duan

Hey, that's correct you need the MEDIA-IN to control the iPhone from the steering wheel.

Also which bluetooth module did they install? Original OEM 9W7 or 9WZ or a after market kit like a Parrot? I have the 9WZ and yes the sound quality is good but not great...I believe rSAP compatible phones can be controlled on the steering wheel over bluetooth when using BT audio and you can see the track info on the radio and MFD.

A RNS510 can be picked up for around R6 000 on ebay from Damian69...brand new OEM. Only difference would be the navigation and 30GB HDD...

I can switch between tracks via bluetooth audio on my HTC

I doubt VW installed the OEM bluetooth kit, they are only comming with South African cars from build week 44, which is another 10 weeks away from production

Best bet would have been RNS510 + 2012 bluetooth premium via ebay for around R10k if you know where to look (pm me if interested)

I even have the new 2011 maps on its way :hi:

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies! Forgive me, but I have some more questions.

My manual mentions the rSAP protocol, so I have to assume it is the later model... however my iPhone 4 does not support rSAP.

Is it just me or does Bluetooth streaming degrade audio quality?

If replacing the Head Unit, is the RNS510 the best option or should I consider other options?

Thanks,
Duan

The module is situated under the driver or passenger seat, have a look and post the part number and we'll tell you if it is the 9WZ with rSAP control.

Yes unfortunately the iPhone does not support rSAP, hopefully iOS 5 sorts that out.

And the best radio there is for us is the RNS 510, all have the version C although a new version D is out...but not on ebay yet.

You're not going to be able to control an iPod from the steering wheel just using the aux in port. You'll need the MDI kit, at least for a direct connection.

Perhaps with Bluetooth streaming, you can also control it, not sure on that one, but then you don't need the aux in or MDI.

Post some pics of the CC.

I have had a look in the car, but can't seem to find the module. My invoice specifies: Bluetooth "Premium" Phone Prep (9ZU)

Does that help?

Well, according to ETKA the 9ZU is the latest BT kit and should work with your iphone, the product code is 3C8 035 730 A, there is a revision B available, but that would be implemented in build year 2012, although there is nothing new about the unit from what I can gather

I do however have the 2012 module in my car and my HTC works perfectly with it (after I figured out to not link contacts, as that made the unit crash)

Are you sure you are making your phone discoverable? Have you tried unpairing your phone, taking your phone's battery out and trying again?

Maybe have a read through this thread aswell, they discuss the 9ZW/9ZU extensively

Found this, but the source doesnt look that well informed

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/24 ... 0&tstart=0

ETKA clearly refers to the unit you have as the latest rSAP/bluetooth unit, so you shouldnt have any problems :hi:

racingfreak,

Thanks for all the info! I am waiting for the dealership to get back to me...

Maybe I should change my iPhone for a rSAP compliant phone, maybe Android?

It sounds to me like the audio quality from Bluetooth is inferior... Same track sounds much better on CD. Is it my imagination or is there technical evidence for this?

My android is also not rSAP enabled, only Nokia and Black Berry that I know of...

The bluetooth streaming on my HTC is awesome...the trick is to not have the volume on the phone too high and rather adjust volume on the RNS/RCD

My galaxy S works fine via rSap. Quite a few android phones have rSap. If they dont there is an app that you can download to activate it anyway.

So the dealership finally acknowledge that I was right...

The vehicle was not equipped with the MEDIA-IN multimedia port (Part no. 5N0 057 342 B) and they also needed to order the connecting cable for the iPhone 4 (in theory Part no. 000 051 446 C).

They called me to tell me the pars arrived, I went and had a look and it all seems fine and they promised to have it installed next Tuesday.

I just have one concern.... when I checked to see if they had in fact ordered the right parts, I plugged the iPhone cable (Part no. 000 051 446 C) into my iPhone4. My iPhone responded by saying that the accessory was not optimised for this phone and that I am likely to experience sound quality issues and interference. Obviously this is a concern for me.

Could it be that I just got the error because the other side of the cable was not actually plugged into anything else, or am I once again heading into a problem area?

Thanks,
Duan

don't worry about that message. I also get the same message, but have not noticed any difference in quality between the sd card and connection to the iphone.

Thanks for that Belix, does it charge the phone?

Yes it does, one of my main reasons for getting it.
Phone shows it's charging even while the car is off, but it only really charges when the car is on.

Thanks Belix,

Looking forward to getting mine on Tuesday...

BTW, where is your MEDIA-IN socket located?

Currently in the glove box, but the plan is to move it to the arm rest location like I'd imagine your CC has. Just waiting for one illusive part to arrive from the UK.

Ironically, the standard place the mount it in the CC seems to be the glove box and like you I would prefer the arm rest.

What is the elusive part which you have ordered to make this possible?

I ordered the retrofit MDI which comes without the armrest insert. What I did not know is that you cannot order the insert separately, it only comes as part of the 'normal' MDI kit.
I also had to get a new armrest bottom section.
Waiting waiting waiting for the insert

Belix, thanks for the info!

Do you mind sharing part numbers, site where you ordered the parts etc?

Thanks,
Duan

Will do, not sure how much is shared with the CC though. Will check ETKA...
Man why do people post things without tracking!! ARGH! Specially when I specifically asked for tracking...

Just a quick thank you to all the guys!

I got my CC back yesterday afternoon and everything now works as I expected!

It is amazing how much knowledge lurking inside these forums.

I eventually decided that the MEDIA-IN plug should be installed in the glove box, as that is the only standard place available for it in the CC.

I have also found and ordered this part http://www.dealextreme.com/p/dock-exten ... 80cm-30394

The above part is an 80cm iPhone/iPod dock extension cable. I ordered two for $10. Theoretically this will allow me to relay the port to the center armrest console without issues. I may end up only using one of these in which case the other may be up for grabs (free) for whoever wants it.

Will keep everyone informed

BTW: If you need to buy a new car, speak to Henk at VW Menlyn and tell him I sent you! They are very professional and make a point of satisfying their customers.
