My Jetta MK2 Build Loads of photos

Post by aarchaic »

OK guys i finally got around to sort my photos out to post my build here, for those who has not seen it in my other thread yet, i would suggest get a bit of coffee something to eat, this is going to be 1 long post!

So i actually just wanted to get a fender fixed and thats where things just went another direction.

I got a itch and wanted to scratch it. My radio started to pack up and got quotes. the very next day my they broke into my car and did me a favor by stealing my old Sony... Only part i hate is the fact they had to brake my whole left front window to gain access to it...

anyway 2 months later i went and bought all this...

Image

Sony GTX-490u head unit
Sony 12" sub ( 1300W peak, 380W rms SVC)
Sony 6x9 ( 400 peak, 100 rms )
a SPL box
phillips 5" splits ( 210w peak, 40 rms )
a 1200w 4 channel Audio bank amp
a 2000w 2 channel audio bank amp
and a 4 gauge cable kit,

Then i started playing with ideas again and started my complete redo of my interior and went and bought me these...

Image
6" sony spilts ( 260w peak, 60w rms )

I went and threw out the sides on the front door and traced the shape of the front and rear door panels for some newly custom made speaker pods and this.

I used 16mm MDF ( Supawood ) and cut the shapes out also made speaker pods angled up towards you.

Image
Image
Image

After make the pods i covered everything in fabric i used fleeze cause it strecthes nicely to form an even shape.
Image

I then wanted to level the rear shelf with the rear seat and also make a nice shape for the 6x9 to sit in also angled a bit towards me rather than just bouncing from the glass. with a VW badge in the middle.

I started to strip the rear out completely.
Image

Made my frame.
Image

Test fitted it
Image

Leveled the top
Image
Image

and completed the rest of it as follows
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

After all that work this is the pods and the rear shelf covered and ready to be fiber glassed.
Image

So the Fiberglass work started

Image
Image
Image

this is after they cured
Image
Image

next step was to fill the uneven surface of the pods with bodyfiller
Image
Image
Image

then the other bog mess started sanding down all the pod panels and shelf
Image
Image
Image

Then while i waited for all this to dry and cure i got bored and decided to do a power upgrade in the car, going from the standard wiring to 0 gauge cable.

here you can see the difference in the thickness of the cables going from the thickest 0 gauge to the middle 4 gauge and then 12 gauge that my previous amp was running on

Image

new terminals for the battery that 0 gauge can be connected to
Image
Image

Blue cable will be my negative
Image

Red positive
Image
Image

And this is my 4 gauge going to the amps in the back of the boot.
Image

Terminals connected notice the Volt meter :)
Image

Old cable next to the cut off of the 0 gauge.
Image

Everything Connected
Image

Battery Upgrade 628 to a 647 battery
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

I started to cover the box and wanted this insert red
Image

I sealed the box from the inside using wood glue and for extra measure fiberglassed the outside ( i had some left )
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

I made an amp mounting board that all my amps could be mounted to and also be hidden away once installed

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

this is how the sub and the amp connects
Image

so i started to install all the extra's in the car
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

I covered all the pods and the shelf with vinyl
Here was my first try ontop and my second at the bottom
Image

Image

Image
Image

after all this i wanted to cover my door panels in Black vinyl also...
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

and this is the over all look of the car from the inside :)

Very nice skills you have there. That must have taken a while to all get done.
Looks like you need the ADY just to be able to lug all that MDF around...

Thank you very much! it took me about 2 3 months from start to finish i've only worked on it at nights and weekends, since i'm living in a flat block i'm not allowed to use power tools on sundays so i could only do minimum then

May I ask how you covered your door panels so PERFECTLY! Hw did u manage to work the vinyl smooth around all them contours? I am wanting to recover mine myself but I'm too scared ill **** it up.did you use a heatgun to "shape" the vinyl? And is it just normal vinyl that you can get from any textile place?
Awesome build man!

Awesome build man!

Its not so perfect as i would have wanted it to be. this was my first time i did it myself with a bit of advice from a couple of guys and some make shift idea, i used Genkem clue after stripping the panels from the material and sanding it a bit down to clean it, and using a hair dryer i heated the vinyl ( the kind with no felt on the back ) and stretch it but a heat gun will give you much better results!

best is try and cover some odd shaped things just so you get the hang of it before actualy attempting the panels self.

When i first started i played around alot with ideas but for some reason red and black just stuck and this is in the end became my main theme red/black and it made a huge difference from the brown/grey interior.
