Vivo GT Racecar - 21st March Race Report

Postby AlexTDi » Fri Nov 11, 2016 7:55 am

It's time for an upgrade!

I recently purchased a Polo Vivo GT race car, it's a VW motorsport chassis and belonged to Mathew Hodges who now races one of the VW Jetta's in the GTC Africa series, The car has some history as it won the 2014 & 2015 Engen VW Cup Masters championship.

As you can see in the pics below, it's just a shell and needs a lot of parts to get it race ready and I plan to race it next year so I need to have it built and ready for a shakedown in February!

The plan is to sell my Mk1 Golf race car to help fund this one but I still have 1 more race to go at the end of this month, then only will I put it up for sale.

I plan on fitting a 2.0 16v ABF motor, 5 speed cable shift gearbox and all the other goodies required. I want to race in Class A in Superhatch next year, might as well go big or go home :driving:

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress of the build, If anyone has stock Vivo/6R/6C steering & suspension parts that I could use let me know

What an awesome project and upgrade Alex.
Looking forward to the build updates bro.

Yip stock 16v ABF to run in class A, once I have a spare ABF on the side I'll look at buying throttle's/cams etc.

You will fall in love with the ABF. Give it revs and hear it scream! Let us know when you will take it out for the first time, want to come see it in person!

Going for 60-2? If rules allow, ditch that distributor early on.

Will let you know, I'm almost certainly going to be slower then I currently am in my 8v Golf, It will take months to get the Polo setup right and me getting used to it.

I have no idea If I'm sticking to dizzy or 60-2, I'll go with which ever is quicker/easier to diagnose if there's issues.
I'll almost certainly run Dictator as that's what our series dyno/tuner is good at.

Hit it up with a Golf 4 Coil. 60-2 crank is already there. Worked a charm. Power delivery is smoother as well. :hi:

alex, do you know of any more vivo or polo 6c shells up for grabs?

Congrats on the new build, I currently run a abf on cams in my mk2, once suspension is setup and you know know the limit of the car. it can do pretty well.

Yeah agreed. Think a 105wkw (stock) up here is more than enough.

I made 105wkw and 173NM on 8v Performance dyno. 63mm Freeflow, branch and Dictator.

I think I grabbed one of the last Vivo's floating around but I'll find out for you, 6C can be bought from VW motorsport but that's completely bare then. I know of a complete 20v Vivo that will become available next year but that's in the region of 100k

The dyno we use is a little more conservative then most others so for the weight of the car once complete, I will need around 90wkw and 170nm to have the perfect balance

A bargain! You can buy a Motorsport shell from VW for around 13k but then it comes with nothing but the shell and roll cage.

Sounds cheap but getting it race ready will still set you back about 100k but that goes for any race car, it's always way cheaper to buy one already built.
