Found my way back to VW - But was it a mistake?

Post by Chrisbad »

Hi folks

My very 1st car was a VW Golf LS, 1979 model. Been through a few Golfs & Jettas since then, but then went Japanese (Isuzu), only because VW did not have a proper 4x4 in SA back then. Still driving an old (1989) Isuzu MU for when I feel like playing in the mud :-).

Always had a soft spot for the brand, so, a few months ago I got myself a VW T6 2.0 DTI, mainly for touring our beautiful country. Already did about 8000km and I must say the VW TDI engine is a gem. Good on power and great on fuel consumption.

A friend of mine (no internet on his farm) followed suit an bought a 2012 T5 Transporter with 200k on the clock - private deal. First 3000km was perfect, but then his van went into limp mode with the glow plug indicator flashing. VW in Polokwane now quotes him R76K to fix the bus!!!!!!!!! They want to replace the cable harness, the fuel pump and the ECU. I cannot believe this. Did we both make a mistake with the brand?

Apologies for asking questions on my very 1st post, but any recommendations where he can take his bus for a 2nd opinion will really be appreciated? Only error code was P009000

I'm holding thumbs

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris. This sound like a fuel pressure regulator / fuel pressure sensor issue on the fuel rail.

Tell him to replace the fuel rail and reset all the fuel adaption values with a VCDS diagnostic machine.

2.0 Tdi have two sensors on the rail and the one on the rear of the engine fails from time to time. What happens is that there is a small sieve inside it that gets clogged with tiny metal particles from the pump which cause it to under read and report false values to the ECU.

One of the symptoms is the car goes to limp mode randomly and the idle speed is high and erratic.

If the car is at the dealer still ask them to reset the adaption values and see if the car behaves better for a while.
