upgrade to Golf 1.6 FSI

Post by Renewabuild »

Good day to everyone in Sunny SA

I no longer live in Cape Town, and am looking for some advice and guidance please.

Steves Auto Clinic used to do a 2.0 upgrade to virtually anything with a golf engine, however I now am told they no longer do this.

I am looking for some advise on the following 2006 Golf 1.6 FSI with 6 speed automatic box.

what crank will fit the 1.6 FSI Block, I am looking at 1.8 or 2.0 crank, rods, pistons.

Head will be ported

4-1 for the Golf 1.6 FSI wildcat or Brospeed or something similar
Cam 289 or similar
Any advise on the poor 6 speed gearbox auto matic that I can improve

Please dont tell me to buy a GTI, thats too expensive and insurance is a nightmare

I am looking for between 160-180 BHP and a nice driver, nothing too racy.

Regards

seriously though, buy a gti.

The mk5 is a heavy car, and would need a lot more ponies to get any type of satisfaction out of it.

Std Gti was 147kw, so 195odd bhp.

the 1.6 fsi was around 116bhp or 85w.

There is a rule of thumb that each KW costs around R1000. That was the benchmark a couple of years ago, so has most probably gone up.

You have 60kw to catch up to get to a stock gti level. So sell your car, add the 60k and then buy a GTI that has the associated chassis upgrades already accounted for.

Not an ideal base at all.If a GTi is out of your budget then consider something else that is more performance orientated. You will have to throw big amounts of money for minimal gains.

I can guarantee you that you will spend more to get that 1.6 to 160hp than it will to buy a GTI......

This engine you have is the second best performing version of this motor. The only one better is the TSI engine found in the Polo GTI and other models.

This engine in its current form does not have much tuning potential as it is already in a fairly high state already.

Parts from bigger motors don't fit here as it's from a different engine family to the bigger motors. Neither is there any real aftermarket parts available to do upgrades that suit your current engine.

Your choices are also limited as to swaps due to the electronics of the car. It uses CAN-bus to communicate between the various ECU's, so unless you have a suitable donor car to provide all the correct parts and the software to carry out the coding, you would be in for a very expensive time doing a swap.

As stated in previous posts, sell this car and go buy the one with the right engine to suit your performance needs.
