Gti Mk 1 VIN number

Post by GTi Scampy »

Hi Everyone
I have acquired a 1984 Gti and need guidance from you people in the know please. The vehicle still needs work to be done like replace leaking brake booster, respray required, non-standard grill to be replaced and the upholstery needs to be patched and the three dial gauges don't work. The vehicle is generally in good condition and drives very well, engine is smooth and gearbox has no issues. I have already started the refurb process and it shouldn't take too long I guess.
The one issue that I need advise on is - it is stolen and recovered and because the vin number was tampered with it now has AAP - numbers. My question is - does this have a major influence on the value of the vehicle or is it still worth its money? It is still Code 2 and registered in my name and there were no issues during the registration process.
Please share your opinion in this regard, especially if you have first hand experience in this regard.
Thanx Guys!

Nope, AAP numbers are not only stamped on stolen and recovered vehicles.

It's stamped when the VIN integrity is compromised.

I was a dumbass when I resprayed my caddy, and removed the vin plate and I riveted the the vin tag back without the correct pop rivets and they stamped the AAP numbers, even though all the numbers matched. Car stayed a Code 2 (Used) according to the registration papers.

I do however think that it will compromise the value, as the general public thinks AAP numbers = Code 3

If a car like a MkI GTi gets sold to the 'general public', the OP needs to be shot.

I believe that Code 2 is used and Code 3 is written off and rebuilt?

Code 1 is brand new on the showroom
Code 2 is anything driven off the showroom floor
Code 3 is Built up (Which could also just be a car that was scrapped and roadworthied and licensed again). A lot of stolen and recovered vehicles also get deemed code 3 at times.

So if someone says he has a code 3 for sale, one has to ask for specifics of the code 3 as to whether its build up, stolen and recovered etc?

Could help you, but also possibly not. Sometimes a car is code 3 not because it was badly damaged but because the value of the repair is deemed as more than or close to the value of the vehicle itself. Insurance then deems it a right off and more often than not they are bought as is, repaired for cheaper and then sold. Sometimes people are honest and they are registered and sold as code 3 and sometimes, people go the underhanded route and sell it as code 2.

Hey guys

Im sorry but its only half truth in the post above.

Yes in most cases its the insurance that deem a car code 2 or code3 . this is not a right off Term used by many. A right off just means that the insurance does not deem the accidents cost of repair viable so the insurance will use right off between them and the insured client whos car it is.

In terms of the people selling a car as a code 2 instead of code3 . This is incorrect.

If you view a car especially a second hand car always always ask to see the cars papers.
If the insurance deems a car code 3 or even a stolen and recovered code3 or even a deregistered re-registered code3 its will always state it on the papers as code 3 but the actual words on the papers are Rebuilt.

If a guy tells u its a code 2 and he is underhanded i understand but u must look on the papers . I dont think its underhanded when they say its a code2 cos it could be a mistake from his or her part not knowing so you must varify it as such.

All i wanted to say.

Thanks guys
