When are we gonna receive some more info about the tape-up time and location?
Via whatsapp either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Will we still get added to a group of sorts or is it on the vwcsa group?

There is a video on the VWCSA Facebook page that was released this morning. At the end it says To be continued. So no we have not been enlightened yet. But I think the announcement is planned to be done in a particular manner.

#DubRun2k18. What. A. Weekend!

Our planning started months ago, and we were concerned that with the short weekend, and a rather poor experience in 2017, that this year would be a non-event.

Well, we released the details of #DubRun2k18 while I was away in Worthersee, and the registrations rolled in. In the end, 90 registered participants from both Johannesburg and Durban started the prep work to do the 580km drive to Durban.

DubRun starts the night before the drive to Durban, at Tape Up.
Over the years, Tape Up has become a small event in itself, and a number of people started joining just to see the cars transformations with blue tape and decals. It was decided that the location for Tape Up would be kept a secret until the night before, and the location only released to registered participants.
We congregated at Bedford Centre this year, in the neat and well lit underground parking, and handed out goodie bags to everyone attending. A huge thank you to VAG Cafe, Leisurequip, Shield Chemicals and Pyro Design for their awesome sponsorship of the gifts and decals for DubRun.

Even Volkswagen Group South Africa joined in on the fun, gifting Chris Wall Media and I, a new Polo Beats Edition, to use for the weekend. Chris spent some time making sure it looked the part, with specially made decals from Pyro Designs. The Polo performed flawlessly during the weekend, and the Beats Audio sound option rocked all weekend!

Friday for me is always the highlight of the trip. I love seeing the congregated cars all ready to do the drive to Durban, and as usual, it was FREEZING cold. (If you haven’t caught the video from Friday morning, check our FB page). With Chris as passenger, I led the convoy out of the Petrolport and the view of almost a 100 cars leaving behind us, has left an indelible mark on my memory.

With Chris hanging out the window, getting frostbite, we took loads of rolling pics of the convoy as the sun came out. We managed to get pics of most of the cars, as the convoy stayed together (for the first time in memory) all the way to Harrismith.
We managed to keep the balance of the cars together after Harrismith, and made good time to Durban, arriving at around 1pm. With all the cars safely in Durban, the comm team went to Hazelmere and Beach Bums to prepare for Saturdays main event.

Our main event for the weekend was at Hazelmere Dam & Resort, just outside of Durban. The picturesque location was a great spot for our Chill N Grill, and over 180 people joined in on the fun.
DJ Ameeth spun some tunes, and with the braais lit, and the cold Slushies on the go, it was a great success. A memorable day spent in the sun with great people!
Sebastian and I judged the cars for our various prize categories and closed down the event at around 4pm. Some of the attendees were only starting to light their fires once we left, and were seriously enjoying some cold refreshments…. (TSC...)
It was time for Prize Giving and some Jam Jars at Beach Bums, now a tradition for DubRun.

The following prizes were awarded:

Best Tape Up – Jason Heritage
2nd Place – Jan Du Plessis
Best Theme – Ruhaan Van Heerden
2nd Place – Jason Amichand
Best Tape Up @ Tape Up – Sascha Miller
Best 90’s – Sandiran Rangan
Best 00’s – Ashwin Pietersen
Best 10’s – Jason Amichand
Most Spirited DubRunner – Elrico
Vape Cartel OTT Tape Up – Johnny Styger
Crowd Favourite – Sebastian Cenizo
Spirit of DubRun – Gareth Munthri

Prizes were sponsored by Retrofitters Kzn - Pty Ltd. R&D Performance -Revo Authorised Dealer, VW Club of South Africa, Vape Cartel, Sascha Miller, Chris Wall Media and Pyro Design.

R&D Performance -Revo Authorised Dealer bought everyone a round, and we partied at Beach Bums until the lights came on!

I’d like to thank our sponsors for their generosity, and their continued support of DubRun. It’s only possible to put this together with their support.
And finally, to Dylan Shaw Photography and Branix, for their tireless efforts in capturing every last detail both in still and video footage. Be on the lookout over the coming days for images and teaser video (we’re putting together a video of the weekend) on our Facebook page. These two guys really went out their way this weekend, and I am truly grateful :)

And just like that, #DubRun2k18 came to an end, a phenomenal weekend with awesome people.
Catch you at our next event in July.
Peace.

Your in VW
Ian
