Post suspension setup m1 golf
I'd just like an idea on the do's and donts with the suspension setup for track purpose, gonna attend some track days at big z to get into it, but would like to have the basics down so as to make it easier,

Okay, got the whole koni story, koni coilovers and h&r springs front, rear koni sport? With koni springs, manual c-clip adjuster for height, currently on lowest and reaar is far to high, so going to get them upgraded to acomidate the h&r springsn with threaded sleaves.

Okay, the rear, I'm going to weld in a gwala, and have the rear arb,
Front, no arb? and camber?

Is there anything on rear that shud be added, or subtracted?
And the front, added? Or subtracted?
Camber, toe in etc?

And advantages and disadvantages of certain kit?

Car will be competing in modified productions hopefully next year...

Thanks in advance

I'd get Stu to tell you what setup the Challenge guys run at Z and take from there. From what I heard from Cpt drivers (Andrea Bate) big Z setup is tricky to get right.

Have you done any racing? I ask as the race setup can be tricky for first time out..... need to get lots of practice. When I started racing, I took a very neutral setup and worked on that to get to something that worked for my driving style. Also a setup perfect for a certain laptime tends or can be rubbish as you go faster....

Enjoy :driving:

Thanks Howie, so since I haven't done circuit racing before, I should just have basic setup and work from there... What would a basic setup be?

not so sure about a "gwala" for the rear axle. you want to create a box effect, so maybe better to get a long piece of 50mm angle iron and weld that accross.

there are so many variables and only you could really find the ideal setup for your car
Basic setup would be about 3-4 deg camber at the front , 1-1.5 degrees at the rear , as a start i would suggest 0 toe at the rear and 15 minutes toe out on the front.

Tyre pressures, start with 1.5-1.6 in front and 2.8 at the rear

Thanks for the replys, so I've seen and heard of the gwala allot, the angle iron will cause the same effect? Or be more effective? And the arb's front and rear, worth installing?

i use hex bar or the 'gwala' , which ever you prefer. afaik its to reduce the twist on the rear axle?
i found slight improvement with the ARB on the rear and bottom stabilizer bar on the front

Cool, yep hex bar and gwala are one in the same, forgot to mention I have the front stabaliser, top and bottom, only thing I don't have is front arb, bought one, just need to pick it up, isit worth while? Heard it induces spinning? So I'm unsure of it....

Don't know of any of the Challenge guys in Cpt that run the front arb, so leave it be. The Vis has hit it spot on with the starting off point. Adjust as your driving increases and the laptimes drop. Setup for one laptime tends to be rubbish for a faster one, so you have to fiddle as you get faster.

Lastly, enjoy :hi: :driving:

Front anti roll bar is a waste of time on our race cars.

The crow bar in the rear axle is in effect the mother of all rear anti roll bars, simplest mod to get the car to handle. Buy a 1.8m long crow bar, cut the ends of, take the axle out, and weld the bastard in.

Vis' settings are a good start, it will have too much rear grip but if u set it up like we do you would scare yourself the first time out.

As you get more experience, reduce the rear camber, and increase the rear toe and tyre pressure (you will just have to get used to the car not wanting to go in a straight line).
Anything over 3.2 bar tyre pressure is pointless though.

Z is a very point and squirt track and you need the car to point very well, so the settings are usually the most extreme at Z.

And remember, never put new tyres on the back ;-)

So to start, what do I put on the rear, used road tyes? As I don't have used semi's for car...

How do u adjust toe and camber on the rear? Space the stub axle? And roughly what effect does what thickness make, or am I lost?
