2.0 tsi timing chain, when, how much ?

Post by mk2fanatic »

Hi guys, needing some info regarding the changing of timing chain and tensioner on the 2.0tsi . Spoke to the workshop manager at vw Pmb, he says there is no particular time or mileage that the timing chain should be changed, he also said that if i were to change it would cost me in the region of 20k ? is this correct ? I also heard that there was a recall on the timing chain tensioner, any one heard of this? Anyways at 20k im seriously considering changing my car. If anyone has some insight on this please share ....

Jus trying to be careful, been hearing some horror stories involving bending valves etc, so taking some preventative measures, dont want to end up with a 50k bill for damaged valves and pistons.

I would definitely get this changed as a preventative measure. For piece of mind get the guides, chains etc replaced as well.

I don't know much about VW timing chains but BMW, Mercedes, Toyota and Nissan all have engines since the stone age that ran timing chains and they were only replaced when they start to make rattle noises. I know of Toyotas and some Nissan Almeras that are running original internals hitting the 600k on the odo and no timing chain issues. Just use a good quality oil.

It is the dodgy cam chain tensioner that fails without any warning on the golf 6 gti and that can lead to major damage. tensioner that VW stocks now has been revised.

My runx rsi had close to 300000km on the clock and chain and tensioner was not replaced at all.

Hey bud,
How sure are you with regards to the engines after 224768 having the revised tensioner? I have contacted my local VW dealerships and VWSA but they were unable to let me know which tensioner was fitted on my car. You have me worried now as my engine number is in the 197xxx range.
Does R4k include all parts and labour?
Thanks in advance
