Caddy Maxi Crew Bus info required

Post by Jetta2 »

Aloha all.

Anyone with a Caddy Maxi Crew Bus (or anyone who knows someone who owns one) around here?
Any known issues, specifically the 2.0 TDI 81kW manual transmission model?
Or even the 2.0 TDI 103kW DSG? Gearbox/motor/electronics/mechatronics issues?

I am looking at buying one either new or second hand and gathering as much info as possible about both models.

Thanks in advance.

My uncle has 1, 2.0tdi with a CLC engine 5spd manual, if im not mistaken its a 2012.

Great vehicle, apart from being ripped of from the previous owner - the cambelt snapped at around 200k kms and had to get the head redone, the only other issues he had was the clutch packed up around 180k kms and a boostpipe tore around 300k kms. And the usual services and brakes.

This vehicle now has over 400k kms on it and is a daily distanced runner, 100% stock still has the dpf on. It didnt even have a wheel bearing or cv joint problem yet even though they load the crap out of it (panel van).

I service a few. Same engine and gearbox as the rest of the cars using them so the same basic issues.
Change the belt when you get it despite whatever service records etc. same chance of dsg mechatronics issues.
So basically nothing scary that you don't already know.
Oh the sliding door lock switch to indicate an open door gets iffy so they tell you the door is open. Sometimes loose connection - other time replace lock is only solution.

Where would you like me to start. . . .

What is your purpose for the vehicle choice? From what I can remember (I really try to forget)

1.It has a single blade leaf at the back so as a daily in town best you strap in your kidney belts.
2. ITs hollowAF, the road noise with no seats in is border line unbearable or at least for me it was. Cardboard (or some ****) door panels
3. With no seats in you can literally see and feel the body flex. But with the both rows of seats (i had 7 seat option) noise is better and feels more rigid.
4. Also had CLC engine code, had to do a clutch at 125k km.
5. Crown pin wheel in the gearbox came loose and broke out a piece of gearbox casing and the clutch was ruined again due to oil on the plates.
6. Have I mentioned all the rattles?

Other than the noise and **** luck I had it was an absolute pleasure to drive and gave 12.5kmpl in heavy city traffic and long distance cruising you could easily see 16kmpl if you dont have a heavy foot.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I know of the "hollow" sound inside the cabin and the odd rattles. Nothing some decent sound deadening can't sort out.
But it is not a Rolls Royce or a Bentley, it is still based on a panel van.

Uses will be general commuting to jobs and I need space for my camera equipment and seeing as they are pretty fuel efficient when driven decently, is a bonus. The cars are just too small on the inside.
And weekends away and holidays makes it easier because of the space.
And taking out the seats and loading my bike for track days. Can fit my bike and all my gear in it.

What about an alltrack? Better or worse than a cross?

No thanks. Paying almost 50K extra for slightly higher suspension, horrible looking wheels and some horrible blacked out body trim is a rip off.

I wont say the price justifies the vehicle, but even on the Cross model add small SUV tires 55 profile, it improves the ride slightly.

Took a test drive today in a dark grey metallic 2017 2.0 TDI Maxi Crew Bus, 5 seat, manual 'box, 17 400km on the odo and the standard 16 inch Bendigo wheel option.
I am very impressed. Some sound deadening in the doors and rear area, upgraded speakers, some decent looking wheels, and it will work nicely.

Let's see what happens, maybe it will join the family.

Nice! Let us know what you end up deciding on. There were quite a few Cross Caddy's that popped up towards the end of last year and I almost made a move on one (in fact, I did but was too cheap) but I happened to see the Alltrack Trendline. I've decided to hold out a bit longer and look to pick up one of those later.

The Maxxi Crew Bus was intended to be industrial, IIRC. So it's not really meant to provide any sedan-like comforts. The Alltrack is there for that reason.

Thanks Reegs.

The manual deal fell through but I found a silver 2017 2.0 TDI DSG with 74K km, upgraded radio, wheels, lights, etc. Used to be a VW owned vehicle so maybe it is very well looked after.
Checking it out on Monday.

The DSG one is a wreck. Whoever owed it previously solidly f***ed up the interior. Seats have marks, small cuts, etc and it smells as if they wiped their asses on every interior surface.

But doing a deal just now on a silver 2017 2.0 TDI manual from McCarthy VW Menlyn. 26 000km and looks like new.
Found it yesterday morning, test drive done and it will be home around Friday.

Just some crappy cellphone pics of a dirty Caddy. It rained last night and this morning, and the Caddy is going for a clean, but it is in very good condition and some minor custom touches will be done by me and that Italian dud who is good with a spraygun.
And I will tackle some decent sound deadening in the interior in due time.

26 000km on the odo and it has the following optional extras:

Bendigo 16 inch wheels (going to get changed very soon...) towbar, radio with bluetooth and SD card slot, Comfort package (front foglights and cruise control).

We are happy with the purchase.
