Mk1 1988 1.8L
Okay so I just bought a MK1 1988 1.8L , the motor revs fast and all but it lacks power. My friend has a 1.6L Mk1(Deco) and he murders me and we are both running stock motors. Only difference is he has a free flow and thats about it. Is there something im missing something ? Car has about 197K Km on it.

When a car tailgates me, i slow down - then floor it and give them a cloud of diesel smoke to choke on

Re: Mk1 1988 1.8L
The carb second stage is kind of difficult to check..
If u feel the car is kind of dead at higher rpm (3000+), then its probably not working. Check the vacuum pipes and all connecting parts to it. There are some other threads explaining it.
With the timing, the best way i think is with a timing light. If u dont have one, i guess u could just probably suck on the distributor vacuum pipe and check for the advance mechanism movement inside the distributor cap.
The original vw carbs are not the best for performance.. I would rather go with a weber 32/36 carb on a stock motor. Got a mechanical second stage, gives some power and not too bad on fuel

Re: Mk1 1988 1.8L
Is the timing advance working?
U can also check the second stage diaphragm on the carb
