Citigolf 1.4i 2002 - Rev counter not working

Post by Mike Aitken »

I have just done a lot of work on this vehicle both within the engine/gearbox as well as internally with bits and pieces not working.
The instrument cluster was removed to replace back light globes that were not working.
Vehicle is all running again EXCEPT for the rev counter not working.
It is the model with the computer box in the wiper well.
I guess it can only be:
- the cluster itself
- wiring
- the computer
- the coil (electronic as FI)
I have a quote from Reef Industrial and Motor Instruments to test the cluster but this is >R500 and not even sure that is the problem.
I have tried other "fixes" such as disconnecting battery, disconnecting and re-connecting wiring to computer, same with cluster wiring.
Can anyone guide me how to troubleshoot this problem?
Appreciated
Mike

Yes, it was working before the replacement of the cluster globes.

Bad contact? Maybe a contact or track broken on the board? Was soldering involved or just pull out ajd plug in?

Hi again - there was no soldering involved, just twisting out the old globes and replacing.
Is there any way to test the cluster rev counter without taking it to a specialist? I don't know anyone who has same citigolf model to just do a switch....

Or perhaps I can eliminate other options to prove it has to be the cluster? Not sure how.....

Hi Stephan,
Update. Cluster taken to Reef Instruments and Rev Counter proven to be working.
I have bypassed the cluster plastic circuit board and wired the signal wire from the plug directly to rev counter - nothing.
Have changed the relay for the rev counter - nothing.
This leaves only 3 things I think?
1. Wiring broken somewhere, very odd as nothing was tampered with
2. The MP9ECU signal out is faulty
3. Signal from the distributor to ECU not working.
Any ideas how to test this?
Regards Mike
