98 Vw Caravelle T4 Engine Swap

Howzit guys

I have a 98 Vw Caravelle T4, it has a 2.5tdi ACV engine. (Front mounted engine - front wheel drive)
This engine has been through war, has endless mechanical and electrical problems which is pointless repairing because of cost and parts availability.

Has anybody done any engine swaps on any of the T4's? Or, if anybody has any ideas of any engines that will be the easiest and least costly..?
I was thinking of:
1. PD 1.9tdi - but theres alot to be changed and it costs a ton.
2. VR6 - I believe T4's came of the production line with vr6 engines as well, Im not sure about the gearboxes though.. Anybody has any info on this?

This vehicle will be used for road trips so it has to be reliable with a little power taking into consideration the size of it.
