difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
hey guys..my DGG box on my mk2 is bust..i settled for a FFZ box due to the scarcity of the DGG and the one i came across was in a mess..according to 3 mechanics they told me that the FFZ is an identical replica of the DGG just a newer version and that the ratios will be the same...but i've heard from other sources that they aren't because the FFZ has "much" shorter ratios...so what is the differences i'm going to experience?i'm running this box with my ABF motor..has anyone ran this FFZ with an ABF on a mk2?
thanks
thanks

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
I think most of the guys have ffz with their abf's.
The dgg does have longer ratios iirc. That 2nd & 3rd gear is awesome. Lol.
Personally prefer the dgg over the ffz as I saw the difference in my cti with both these boxes. Oh theres also a difference with the cv cups I think on the ffz. You will have to change it as its smaller iirc. Let some of the experts respond.

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
DGG & FFZ Gear Ratios
1st = 3.455
2nd = 1.944
3rd = 1.370
4th = 1.032
5th = 0.850
R&P = 3.941
I believe the FFZ ratios are too short for anything above a 1600 and I use an FF on my 2l, that said ... the FFZ ratio set does seem to be the ratio set of choice on this board for whatever reason(s)
FF Gear Ratios
1st = 3.455
2nd = 1.944
3rd = 1.286
4th = 0.909
5th = 0.712
R&P = 3.894
Possibly a better compromise would be the ACD, (or AUG? which shares the same ratios bar 2nd gear)
ACD Gear Ratios
1st = 3.455
2nd = 2.118 (AUG = 1.944)
3rd = 1.444
4th = 1.129
5th = 0.894
R&P = 3.667
Download this spreadsheet and play around with the ratios http://www.mediafire.com/file/6oxiaug90 ... ulator.xls

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
The CTI comes with an AUG box that's the one you reffering to which has larger cv cups, the DGG comes out of the Polo's.Tashveer wrote:I think most of the guys have ffz with their abf's.

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
Sup
FFZ is the later/newer version of the DGG box. They have identical ratios. I used to work at VWSA as senior tech advisor to the dealer network in Sub Saharan Africa. Use or don't use my advice/info, its ur choice.
Note also that the FF box referred to above is not the same as FFZ. They are out of the old mk1's. They have 3.89 diff.
FFZ have 11mm diff rivets as opposed to 9mm on DGG and older.

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
Thought i would share some experiences i had with my FFZ box... All good and lasted thus far without any issues. 2'nd gear syncro slowley starting to give way, gonna try some new g-box oil and see if that will make a difference.
Speeds i got per gear in my mk1 at 7000rpm on ffz gearbox: 1st, not to sure about 45, 2nd 110, 3rd 160, 4th 190, 5th not tested. This is obviousley not true gps speed, baring in mind the tyres used were 175/60R13 semi's.
@ 6000rpm speeds were as follows: 1st 40, 2nd 80, 3rd 120, 4th 160, 5th 205.
Stock standard FFZ box and diff. Used 210mm clutch kit.
For my motor 1st and 2nd gear are perfect, i would however like to get a shorter 3rd and 4th ratio.

Lemme see if I understand this right,the 1st speeds u got because you had 13 inch semi's and revd up to 7000rpm per gearWit Ark wrote:Thought i would share some experiences i had with my FFZ box... Nice speeds even for speedo readn
But howcum the big difference in speed in second run,I mean our motors make power within 6000rpm range so shouldn't be such a big drop unless you slapped on sum 18" pot lids.
I got a dgg on my velo from factory and get 140-145 on 3rd jus for the record.

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
The speeds obtained at the 6000rpm mark were with the stock blik rims and tyres, think they are something like 155/80R13. sorry forgot to mention that.

My one started making big noise at 12000kms so vw changed it,only when I did motor swap I realised its a DGG but when it was 1.4 I used to be one up on other 1.4's.lolTashveer wrote:Didn't all the velos come with ffz?mojo786 wrote:I got a dgg on my velo from factory and get 140-145 on 3rd jus for the record.

i had the 2y 1800 16v box on my abf...it has long gear ratio
good combination..i did try an ffz box the gears wear to short i think.. although it revs faster with the ffz

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
Thought you may find the graph below of interest;
The 2Y has the same ratios as an ACD, bar 5th which is shorter (0.912 vs. 0.894)
The ACD has the same ratios as an AUG, bar 2nd which is shorter (2.118 vs. 1.944)
The DGG and FFZ share the same ratios!
(The assumption for the graph below is 195/50/15 wheels/tyres)

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
Hi guys
We just fitted ffz 5speed box into vw golf mk1.
Lastnite while I test the car on my way home and find out that the car doesn't pull as a golf mk1 1'4 is supposed to. And somewhere is a strange kling noise while im driving, don't know what is.
Also seems that im driving on clutch and it's stif.

Re: difference between a DGG and FFZ gearbox?
The velo originally was developed as soon as they stopped manufacturing the life in 2005 I think... so your first velo that came out was exactly the same as the life only difference was that the life was a much faster 1.6i and to date it still is.. that is normally aspirated...
