In my experience, with a good thermostat, the bulk of the cold enrichment should be done and dusted in the first 2 km. I remember monitoring the fuel pressure controller current (which fine-adjusts the AFR) on my Audi, while I was diagnosing faults on the KE-Jet system. The bulk of cold enrichment is over after a minute or two. By the time the coolant temperature needle started moving out of the cold zone (60 - 70°, perhaps 5 minutes / 2-3 km driving), the injection system was pretty much at standard AFR. But the KE-Jet is 25 years old. I would hope that modern engine control systems are even better than this.

It varies hugely. Some will be done in no time at all and other will take forever. So without having checked every individual car out there you can't say it will be done in 2km. My v10 s6 does not reach operating temp before I have gone 15km. It takes 14l of water and has th main radiator and two aux rads. Even if the thermostat works it takes a while for all the water in that engine to heat up.

So it was to get the concept over of short trips vs longer trips. We don't have to pull teeth on the exact distance.

Do you monitor oil temperature at all? The water temp in my R rises quickly to 90 on the gauge but the oil temperature takes a lot longer to reach the same temperature. I take it easy until the oil temperature is at least 90.

Not VW car but just something to compare it with. This was done constantly with a full tank fill up to be 100% sure and was always constant readings.

2004 Nissan Almera 1600cc
120 000km on the clock at the time.
100% town driving using 2500 to 3000rpm and using only, lets say, quarter throttle.
Speeds at 70km/h in 4th gear and no really hard acceleration.
Aircon permanently on as it was December and hot.

I got 14,5km/liter

CTi gave me in the region of 10 to 11 depending how much I used the aircon

We bought 3x 2015 "out the box" polo vivos 1.4's, and with aircon on we averaged 650km's... easy.

They are fuel sippers.

Ditto in my cars hitherto (Audi and Fox have no direct heat exchange between water and oil, other than in the head; Golf 4 TDI may have a heat exchanger... not sure... but even that one is on 90 in about 5 minutes). AFR is normally metered on water temp, not oil temp.

Obviously larger engines would take longer. 13 l of oil and 14 l of water is huge.

Golf 4 tdi has a heat exchanger yes.

Have you checked water temps in VCDS? Haven't checked in my audi yet, but my cupra used to show 90 on the guage when the water was still around 70 od on vcds. Guage has quite a bit of "Buffer" in it it seems.

Not in my Golf but I did a few years back when I had my 9n Polo and B6 A4, 90 deg C water temp on the gauge was anything from around 80 deg C to 100 deg C.
