2.0T Stripped TB Threads on Intake Manifold

Post by liv »

Hi guys... tried replacing the throttle body on the DTM, and upon removing the old TB, it looks like the threads in the plastic intake manifold are poked so I cant get the new TB on properly. Any ideas on how I can get the TB refitted? Intake has since been removed.

Do a quick google search - it’s pretty specialized so needs a helicoil trained guy. There should be a call out fee and then a charge per hole they need to thread.

Not really, no.
If you can use a drilling machine properly and drill a hole straight, then it is simple.

What was wrong with the throttle body ? They don't easily die.
It was the idiots in pietermaritzburg that stripped those. You can't helicoil or insert becuase of the self tapper type thread on the screw. So you put them in with pratley plastic steel epoxy. Give it till the next day to dry and then tighten it a bit more.

Won't drilling and taping in new thread work ?
The TB on my kia had the same problem where the aluminum stripped, however on the kia it is possible to drill a hole straight through and put in a longer bolt with a nut on the back.

Not sure if it can be done on the VW motor though, you will need to check first.
As I lay rubber down the street.
I pray for traction I can keep, but if I spin
and begin to slide, please dear God protect my ride.

I figured it was the previous guys that stuffed up the threads.

Car kept throwing a CEL, with a fault on the TB which was happening intermittently - assume its the TB actuator as that usually fails on these TB's, and you can see the wear on the gear where it typically idles. Got a working TB so figured i'd swap it out.

Will try your method... is definitely my preference compared to drilling out the manifold. much easier to try this fix with the manifold off the car, but refitting the intake with the TB installed is a mission...

Unfortunately these are plastic manifolds... spoke to a thread specialist, and he says he has fitted helicoil to these manifolds before, but you wont be able to use the OEM bolts as Panic mentioned. Will try the pratley option and go for the helicoil with aftermarket bolts option if that fails.
