washer dropped into intake

Post by TMG »

Long time no post. Recently got my Mk2 project car up and running again.

So I disassembled an intake on my 20 8V X-flow turbo and heard a small M6 washer drop by accident. While I cannot be sure that it entered the intake I need to make sure of this before cranking it again. :bang:

I removed the intake completely and cannot find this washer in Cylinders 2-4.

Cylinder 1's intake valve is open and it's possible that the little washer entered the cylinder. Can one inspect the cylinder without removing the head?

If you have a bore scope you can see in the cylinders.
If not, safest way is to remove the head.
Been there, done that, used plenty choice words.

You can try use a small magnet on a piece of string and get it into the plug hole or past the inlet valve, but seeing as the valves are steel and a magnet will stick to them, that can be an issue in itself.

Use a borescope and go through the spark plug hole. You can get the washer with a magnet throught the plug hole as well.

Thank you for the feedback. I wonder whether one can rent such a scope or whether one could buy a cheap one. In the states little USB versions sell for 15 US$ but I don't know if one can find something similar here?

I also searched a bit and contacted a Pretoria based seller, let's see whether I get any response.

What a relief, washer pulled out of cylinder #1. A kind local mechie sent his son with a borescope and with some coaxing with wires and a magnet on the end of a screw driver we were able to get it out. Now to run for oil and some bits and pieces and look to fire her up..also some billies for the kind samaritan.
