If the aim is to burn tons of cash then vr6t is definitely better than any of the other options.

So I'm now ready to buy my new lump ...so the question is .. Abf vs 20vt ..which is an easiest conversion? Not really prince but with fab work and conversion .the prices for these engines are vary only a few 100 bux .thank you guys for all the feedback I really appreciate the feed back you provide .
..is the vr engine good for anything else beside exhaust note ?

20vt is an "out of the box" solution
You would still need to buy turbo and auxilary parts and do plumbing and drop compression ratios on the 16V before it can be boosted

Re: Want to go boosted

Buying an ABF is by far the MOST expensive way to build a 16vt motor.
The cheapest way is to buy a longblock 8v bottom end , a 16v head and putting that together.
So between the 2 the 20vt is the cheapest by a long shot.

A mate just went through the same exercise.

MK1 in reasonable condition 45K.
AEG 1.8T 20V And he did lots of the labor himself he still parted with 40K. Stock turbo and bigger injectors with basic plumbing gave him 125WKW.

So now he has a GT26 or 28 AR60 (I think) with decent plumbing and a new digital HKS management for another 15K and he got 191KW at 1.1 bar with 347nm. He built it as a toy and did a lot of stuff himself like rebuild gearbox and fit button clutch etc. Before he wiped his eyes 120K gone. . .

Is this conversion any harder to do on a mk3 ? Opposed to a mk1 ? The reason I ask is that I'm not sure of the amount of fabrication work needed for engine mounts ?I seen a mk1 conversion (did look do-able for my nearby resources)

I have called a few places for a drive in drive out package .the price then scared me on the complexity of a task like this.

If 180wkw is possible without doing internals I should be happy till budget allows for better bits .

Re: Want to go boosted

There is no fabrication to install the engine. It drops in. Fabrication needed fo exhaust and intake and boost pipes. No more difficult to do than in a mk1.
I cannot comment on power levels duento durban etc. but really the limiting factor is the high cr and our iffy petrol.
That Is what I told you from the start. Unless you can do 90% diy your budget is way way way short.

Agreed , my intended budget would have fell short of my expectations. Thank you panic for all the advice you have provided .

Now to figure out where to start...

Do I buy parts that I can fit and use now and wait for engine .

Eg

Fpr
Hpfp
Dictator 60-2
Piping

OR should he engine be priority ?

Ok what is the base car. Isn't it already injection?. If you are buying a complete 20vt then there is already a FPR on the fuel rail. HPFP is something you find in TFSI engines
You just need a regular injection pump.

The base car is my mk3 . I will be buying a complete engine .

Thanks for that panic . I was told my gearbox will not manage with the torque output of this engine . I currently have a AUG gearbox .should I be concerned or is this information misleading ?

Grrr I know the base car is a mk3. Is it carb or injection ie. Does it have fuel injection tank and pump or not.
The aug will handle 400hp if used correctly. People that tell you they can't handle a little 1.8t in semi stock form have no clue what thet are talking about or is just trying to run your bill up by fitting stuff you don't need. A 210 mm clutch with 1.8 16v pressure plate will also hold that power comfortably. Again i had that exact same setup for years in a mk3. Stock box that came with the 1600 engine but I upgraded the brakes.

The car was carb ,but now fi .I didn't change the tank (no sure how my mac got it to work )

But I'm guessing it's a 3 bar fuel pump that was used .Bosch 3 bar

Ok. Then in theory you don't even need a pump. There is no such thing as a 3 bar pump. A pump supllies flow. Pressure is a function of resistance to flow which is what is provided by the fuel pressure regulator.

Boet, not to sound like too much of a ****, but with all the questions you asking and the need for a mechanic to help you van die val af in die sloot... I do not think you should be trying to build a turbo car... maybe take your r30 grand you have saved up, sell your current car, and look for a g4 gti or a polo gti for what you have then...

I know its fun building a car, but then you need to be doing a lot of it yourself.

I have a friend that likes cars and modifying, but because he doesnt know how to changea spark plugor do an oil change without a mechanic. He got ripped off so badly, spending and replacing stuff unnecessarily, he just gave up in the end...

Im not saying give up, but also try and understand that you need to be able to sort things yourself, and also have lots of mechanical sympathy...

I think what panic is trying to get to is that your AUG box will be fine, just dont rape it all day everyday... a turbo charged car places some extra strain on all components, so just treat it with respect and it will last...
