2 liter turbo whistling noise under acceleration

hi guys.

so my 2006 jetta 2.0FSi ,with rather high mileage, is making a whissling noise under acceleration.

it gets worse as the engine heats up.

the car does not use oil more than i think it should. about 500ml every 4 tanks or so.

the car does not smoke.

it feels as though the car has not lost any power.

I recorded the sound this morning and will try and upload the file. (if i can figure out how)

my mechanic says its turbo, but he doesn't work on turbos. i think it might be something else.

any advice please guys?

car has 330 000 kilos on the clock and has never missed a beat, apart from an injector that needed replacement once.

really cannot hear any whisteling on the clip but yes commonly it is caused by a turbo intake wheel that has gone out of balance. It happens when the wheel touches the housing and is caused by wear or failing bearing. Time to redo turbo or at least get it looked at.

Have the car booked in for Thursday morning - at Bosch - not sure where else to take it.

Driving it today, I agree that it does sound like a blade could be scraping the inside of the housing.

OK, bosch had a look and turbo is fine
They suspect leaking manifold.

I was about to suggest a leaking manifold...

One can hear the separate exhaust gas charges coming through. (Well, in my moderately humble opinion, I can. )

On a petrol,engine if the manifold leaks then the idle will be too high. Me think they are barking up the wrong tree. If it leaks it will be between the turbo and the throttle body.
Unless you are talking exhaust manifold but then it would be blowing noise not whistle.

But won't that cause loss of power?

Exhaust leak will cause loss of power if it is big enough yes.

Just got the car back.

Turbo was fine, but gasket between turbo and exhaust wasn't.

Mother trucker. I really need to relook my pricing. The gasket between the turbo and the exhaust costs around R180 and takes maybe 20mins to undo the 4 bolts and change it.

well, to be fair, about 2600 of the cost was for labour.
and he did gasket on both sides of the turbo.

as for downpipe - I doubt that downpipe is a good idea on a vehicle with > 300K on the odo??

also it's easy to say that it was waaay overpriced - but in my shoes, not so easy. I got 1st opinion from the regular service centre and they said youre turbo is ****. Then these guys said, nope its not the turbo. now after this where should I go to get the job done for significantly less? Iva had my share of backyard mechanics.

You basically paid for company overheads and agreed that certain backyards mechanics cannot be trusted but there are good ones too.

If you have a lift , The job itself is quick(2hrs max) just a bunch of nuts and bolts to loosen and even easier done with a air-gun. Gasket's is off with old and on with the new.

Down-pipe wont be a bad idea for your vehicle, considering your mileage , surprised CAT is not blocked or bottle necking, come to think of the a partially blocked cat can put pressure on the manifold , turbo, gaskets since flow is slow
